Where the Uber IPO Ranks Among Startups

The on-demand car service company Uber Technologies Inc. made waves again last week when it raised $1.2 billion at a company valuation of approximately $18.2 billion. Naturally, that huge valuation once again created speculation of an Uber IPO.

Shortly following the announcement, Uber Chief Executive Officer Travis Kalanick spoke with The Wall Street Journal and denied that an initial public offering was on the immediate horizon. But when a company raises as much money and grows as quickly as Uber has, it's only a matter of time before it holds an IPO.

Uber IPOThe company stated that the $1.2 billion it raised came from a consortium of investors, with Fidelity Investments making the largest contribution.

The $18.2 billion valuation is huge and places Uber at the top of the list of companies that have been funded by venture capitalists.

In fact, the current second-highest valued startup, Airbnb, isn't even close, with an estimated value of $10 billion. The vacation and home rental company, founded in 2008, raised $800 million in its last round of fundraising.

The Chinese mobile-phone company Xiaomi Technology and the web storage and cloud-computing company Dropbox have each been valued at $10 billion as well, following rounds of fundraising that totaled $347 million and $507 million respectively.

Another tech company that's been rumored for an IPO is Pinterest, which was valued at $5 billion in May of 2014. Other high-profile startup valuations include Elon Musk's SpaceX at $4.8 billion as of December 2012, Spotify at $4 billion as of November 2013, and Snapchat at $2 billion as of November 2013.

This latest round of funding comes after a Bloomberg report in May tabbed Uber for a $10 billion valuation. Clearly the newest figures trump recent estimates, and that has some skeptics wondering if the five-year-old startup is really worth the hype...

Justifying Uber's Valuation

According to Kalanick, Uber's tremendous growth is the main factor driving the company's valuation.

"We're at least doubling every six months. It's probably more robust than that, but that's good enough... That's revenue," Kalanick told The Journal.

And that growth has venture capitalists digging into their wallets to fund Uber.

"It's probably the fastest international expansion that I've ever seen from a venture-backed company," said Benchmark venture capitalist Bill Gurley. Benchmark is Uber's largest institutional investor, after funding the company in 2011.

Uber launched its service in 2009 in San Francisco, and today the company operates in 130 cities worldwide. Kalanick has also stated that the company has eclipsed the 1,000-employee mark and plans to continue adding employees as revenue increases.

But even as the company grows at an incredible rate, there are still these challenges facing a potential Uber IPO...

Uber IPO in Trouble

The first major hurdle for Uber is its competition. The market has been flooded with similar ride-booking apps including Lyft, SnapCar, Sidecar, LeCab, and Allocab, just to name a few.

These apps are smaller and less established than Uber, but its biggest competitor, Lyft, has been growing quickly as well.

In December, Lyft announced that it was experiencing a growth rate of nearly 6% per week. Around the same time, five weeks of information leaked to Gawker indicated that Uber was growing at 2.8% per week during that limited time frame.

As of April 2013, Lyft had raised $250 million and had expanded to 60 cities. At the time, that put Lyft on par with the $307 million Uber had raised.

Uber also faces regulatory issues, as certain cities try to apply stricter rules on the car-service application.

Essentially, Uber is an unregulated company operating in the regulated taxi and limousine industry. Uber has continually claimed that it is a technology company that pairs drivers with travelers like any other travel company. That has drawn the ire of taxi companies and government regulators.

In fact, Uber ended its service in Vancouver, British Columbia, because of regulatory issues, but Kalanick maintains that won't end up hurting the company in the long run.

"We've now launched in 130 cities, and there's only one product in one city that we ever backed out of: Vancouver," Kalanick told The Journal. "There are flare-ups, the taxi industry will put pressure on a city government to stifle competition... In the win column we have 130 and in the loss column we have one. So yes, these are battles but we've lost one battle out of many."

For now, an Uber IPO is not imminent, and that should provide Kalanick and his officials time to continue growing Uber's business. And when the time comes for an IPO, it will likely be one of the biggest of that year, especially if the company is already raising billions of dollars.

Best Undervalued Companies To Invest In 2014

We continue to buy and patiently harvest broadly diversified portfolios of undervalued stocks for their long-term appreciation potential, says Jason Clark; in The Prudent Speculator, he looks at three consumer-related ideas.

Shares of Hasbro (HAS) advanced 10% after the maker and seller of toys reported earnings and revenue that beat analyst expectations.

HAS reported earnings of $1.31 per share, versus consensus estimates for $1.28, on revenue of $1.37 billion. Period results were supported by cost control initiatives and strong international sales.

We boosted our Target Price for HAS to $56 and we note that the stock still yields 3%, despite the handsome gains enjoyed this year.

PetMed Express (PETS) announced that its fiscal Q2 net income climbed 5% on increased reorders, higher online sales, and lower operating expenses.

However, EPS came in a penny light of analyst expectations and shares of the pet pharmacy company were pummeled, dropping more than 12% on the news. We still like PETS' solid balance sheet, cash flow generation, and 4.6% dividend yield.

Similarly, the company's forward dividend yield could stand some boosting, another possibility made more feasible by an acquisitions slowdown. Currently, however, with a forward yield of 0.80%, Varco falls short of such other big oilfield services providers as Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) , with its 1.80% forward yield, or Baker Hughes (NYSE: BHI  ) , at 1.40%. On that basis, it would constitute a distinct positive to see National Oilwell Varco's own anticipated yield raised to at least 1.00%, a level that would hardly result in an arduous payout for the company.

Dear Fellow Shareholder: The U.S. economy continues to gradually expand, building on the 5+ year recovery from the Great Recession. Employment levels are improving, though progress has been slower than expected. Inflation, for now, remains subdued. As signaled and on cue, the Fed has been weaning the economy (and investors) off of the extraordinary uantitative easingstimulus. Investors have generally shrugged off world events that might otherwise cause high anxiety (ISIS and the Middle East, Russia and Ukraine, etc.). As attention now turns to when the Fed will raise short-term interest rates, it seems plausible that volatility may intensify as the stimulus security blanket is removed. In the meantime, companies are taking advantage of the artificially low interest rate environment and sanguine investor sentiment. Merger activity remains robust, fueled by cheap and readily available credit. The IPO market has been very active, headlined by the successful Alibaba offering in September. Corporate treasurers continue to issue loads of debt on attractive terms, locking in generationally low interest rates for long terms. While these conditions will not last forever, they have helped opportunistic managers accelerate equity value growth at many companies.Investment Commentary and Outlook After three years of seemingly non-stop gains, the stock market took a pause in the third quarter. Energy stocks, both large and small, fell materially as investors worried about too much oil and gas supply coming online in North America (what a difference a decade makes). First, history: Pacific Rim -- a similar genre film -- needed a huge overseas haul in order to make break-even and Godzilla has a reported $160 million budget. Second, moviegoers don't seem interested. Only 6,256 people on Rotten Tomatoes said they wanted to see the film at the time of writing. Good news, Time Warner (NYSE: TWX  ) investors. After suffering a run of bad numbers, buzz is finally building for Pacific Rim, director Guillermo Del Toro's giant robots vs. monsters epic that cost as much as $200 million to make.

Plenty is it stake for Warner and financing partner Legendary Pictures, says Fool contributor Tim Beyers in the following video. Why? Both studios need a new franchise to bank on. The fact that 75% of critics who've seen Pacific Rim rate it as "fresh"-- better than the 67% accorded to surprise hit World War Z -- suggests the film could enjoy a decent run in theaters.

But will it be as big a winner as the zombie thriller? According to Box Office Mojo, Viacom's (NASDAQ: VIAB  ) Paramount Studios has earned more than $370 million in worldwide grosses from the film, which has enjoyed uncommon staying power after last weekend's gate drop of just 38%, when 50% or more is typical. Getting even within spitting distance of that performance would be a win for Del Toro, Legendary, and Time Warner investors, Tim says.

Do you like the odds of Pacific Rim outperforming? Please watch the video to get Tim's full take, and then leave a comment to let us know whether you plan to see the film.

Five years after Pong, with several arcade smash hits under its belt, Atari launched the 2600, which succeeded where Magnavox failed. Development of the Atari 2600 was incredibly lengthy and expensive by the standards of the day, having begun in 1973 after the purchase of an engineering start-up and eventually costing Atari $100 million to complete. The high development cost, paired with Atari's worsening operating conditions in an industry already saturated with knockoffs, pushed Bushnell to sell the company to Warner Communications (now Time Warner (NYSE: TWX  ) ) a year before the 2600 launched. Cassandra Hubbart, AOL NEW YORK -- Hulu has failed to persuade a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit accusing the video streaming service of illegally sharing users' viewing history with Facebook (FB) and business metrics company ComScore (SCOR) U.S. Magistrate Judge Laurel Beeler in San Francisco on Friday rejected Hulu's argument that viewers needed to show actual injury to recover damages, even if they qualified as "aggrieved" persons under a 1988 federal law protecting the privacy of video renters. That law, the Video Privacy Protection Act, was adopted after a newspaper in 1987 published an article about movies that the Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork had rented. Hulu had argued that the law "was not adopted to impose multibillion dollar liability on the transmission of anonymous data where no one suffers any actual injury." Beeler, however, concluded that "the statute requires only injury in the form of a wrongful disclosure" before damages might be available. She didn't rule on the merits of the case. Hulu is a joint venture owned by Comcast's (CMCSA) NBCUniversal, 21st Century Fox's (FOX) Fox Broadcasting, and Walt Disney's (DIS) ABC. Chief Executive Officer Mike Hopkins on Dec. 18 said Hulu will post $1 billion of revenue in 2013, up from $695 million in 2012. The lawsuit seeks class-action status on behalf of Hulu users nationwide. It was brought by several people in California, Illinois and New York seeking damages of at least $2,500 per violation, plus punitive damages and other sums. These plaintiffs claimed that Hulu let third parties engaged in marketing, advertising, and social networking track their video choices without permission. They claimed that Hulu sent such information to Scorecard Research, a comScore market research unit, and sent "Facebook IDs that linked their video choices to personally identifiable Facebook registration information." Hulu didn't immediately respond on Monday to a request for comment. Its lawyer Robert

DISH Network Corp (NSDQ: DISH) is also said to be hungry for a fight over T-Mobile.

A Sprint-T-Mobile tie-up could be a game-changer, as it would reduce to three the number of nationwide cellular service operators. The Federal Communications Commission has already rejected an AT&T Inc (NYSE: T) move for T-Mobile that would have accomplished the same winnowing of the field.

  • [By Caroline Bennett]

A telecom giant had some surprising investment news last week. It was expected that a majority of Sprint (NYSE: S  ) would soon be bought out by Japan's SoftBank, while Sprint would potentially buy out smaller company Clearwire. But just like a soap opera, a huge plot twist might be in the works, with two surprising new players: DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH  ) and Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) . The companies have made plans to buy out both Sprint and Clearwire, respectively.

  • [By Anders Bylund]

DISH Network (NASDAQ: DISH  ) dropped its $25.5 billion bid for Sprint and then abandoned the $6.3 billion offer to buy Clearwire. That leaves Japan-based wireless operator Softbank unopposed in its quest to own Sprint, which in turn lost its only challenger for Clearwire ownership. Sprint shareholders have already approved the Softbank merger. It's only a matter of time and formalities before the Sprint-Clearwire bundle lands in Japanese hands.

Hot Healthcare Technology Companies To Buy Right Now

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) The Federal Aviation Administration is ordering inspections of the Boeing 767, one of the aircraft maker's most popular commercial jets, to check for problems that it says could cause loss of control of the planes.

The problem being cited is something that the FAA and Boeing have been looking into since 2000, and the planes have already been subject to earlier inspections.

But the FAA, in a notice in the Federal Register on Monday, said it has determined that potential problems with rivets could cause "failures or jams" that affect the plane's ability to climb or descend. The failure could result in "possible loss of control of the airplane," the FAA said.

The problem has not been cited as a cause in any crash of a 767, which is one of the most widely-used Boeing jets. Boeing has delivered 1,061 of the long-range, widebody planes since it went into service in 1982.

Some of the airlines objected to the proposed FAA action. United Continental (UAL, Fortune 500) filed comments arguing that previous inspections ordered by the FAA, along with service bulletins from Boeing, have addressed the risks being cited by the FAA in its new order. But the FAA rejected that argument.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]Throughout the stock market, companies in many industries have boosted the level of their share buybacks, and tobacco has its share of players following that strategy. Philip Morris International, for instance, has spent more money buying back its stock since 2008 than it has in dividend payments to its investors, and Lorillard (NYSE: LO  ) has had a roughly 50-50 balance between buybacks and dividends over the past several years.
  • [By Dan Caplinger]Tobacco is big business in the U.S. and around the world, and the companies that produce tobacco earn strong profits. Over time, federal and state governments have increasingly shared in the revenue from cigarettes and other tobacco products. In the two decades between 1992 and 2012, total federal tax collections on tobacco tripled to $15.6 billion, while net state tax collections have risen at almost the same pace to more than $18.2 billion in 2012. For producers, taxes have risen in concert, with Altria Group (NYSE: MO  ) having paid $6.8 billion in excise taxes on tobacco products in 2013, while Reynolds American (NYSE: RAI  ) paid $3.7 billion and Lorillard (NYSE: LO  ) added almost $2 billion more.

10 Best Logistics Stocks To Watch For 2014

In what I suppose was meant to be a hilarious stunt, lululemon athletica (NASDAQ: LULU  ) posted a fake CEO job listingon its website. The job is real, but the listing was facetious. However, it does shine a light on what Lululemon needs -- a CEO who can take it to the next phase of its existence. Christine Day was both loved and hated by Lululemon's core customers and, with her departure, the brand has a chance to get a more unanimous choice on board. It also has a chance to completely screw things up.

While customers may have been lukewarm to Day, investors loved her outlook. The ex-Starbucks Day had a global vision for Lululemon, but it was slow to play out. The company's incredibly conservative expansion plans read like a Jane Austen how-to-land-a-husband guide. All the courting of yoga instructors, vendors, and consumers made for slow going, and gave Under Armour (NYSE: UA  ) and others a chance to catch up.

Who wants to be a millionaire?
The Lululemon CEO spot is one of the most wide-open hires in recent memory. The company has shown that it's happy to pull in non-yoga focused executives, but it's in a position where one good candidate just isn't enough. Analysts have pointed out that Lululemon is currently in a management limbo, with executive vacancies in its product, marketing, and logistics departments.

Online donations to U.S. nonprofit groups are growing much faster than other types of gifts, according to new research by The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

The Chronicle found that online donations in 2012 grew to $2.1 billion, a 14% increase from the previous year, based on information provided by online-fundraising processors Blackbaud, Network for Good and PayPal.

Online giving to the country’s biggest charitable groups also grew by 14%, it said.

Meanwhile, the Chronicle noted, total donations grew only 3.5%, or 1.5% adjusted for inflation, according to Giving USA's yearly study.

Notwithstanding continued growth, online giving still accounts for only a small fraction of most charities’ budgets. According to the Chronicle’s research, the median share is just 2.1% of all donations from private sources for the large charities surveyed.

That’s changing. Nearly three-quarters of the groups surveyed had a goal for online donations to account for more than 10% of their overall fundraising efforts in coming years, and about a fifth expected Internet gifts to account for as much as 20% of their overall donations.

Actually, there are several companies on these lists that qualified for either or both of my favorites lists. For example, Aflac (AFL) and or Emerson Electric (EMR) could easily be on both lists. My point is that I feel the reader should give the same consideration to each of these names as they would the two top 10 lists. To be clear, selecting the top 10 was difficult and therefore to a great extent subjective on my part. My method was to simply run a F.A.S.T. Graphson each Dividend Champion with above-average total return calculations. Then my lists were created by picking and choosing those companies that from my review looked best based on value, earnings and safety.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Harry Domash, Publisher, DividendDetective and Winning Investing]

Harry Domash: Yeah, in fact, H&Q Life Sciences, ticker (HQL), is actually a closed-end fund, but it invests entirely in biotech and pharmaceutical companies, and if you look around the world, the investing stocks right now—besides the social media stocks—that's really the one area that has had a lot of recent growth and we expect that to continue.

I think the closed-end fund, and we'll get into that maybe a little bit later, but closed-end funds are a good way to cover it, when you're talking about a sector like that.

Johnson & Johnson is an interesting case, because, as you know, Johnson & Johnson is a big company that invests, and that owns a lot of different companies itself in the medical field.

You know, it owns hundreds of operating companies and it's primarily in the pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, and in consumer products, but Johnson & Johnson was a mismanaged company for a while and they were really underperforming their peers.

In fact, some of their factories were closed, their pharmaceutical production factories were forcibly closed by the government because they didn't meet standards, but they were taken over by a new CEO a few years ago, two or three years ago, and now things are improving, so Johnson & Johnson is kind of coming from down and out to being a leading company again.

They've got a lot of products, cancer-type products, and things on the pipeline and it just seems like things are going very well so we have hopes that Johnson & Johnson has reported the last two quarters are the first ones that have really been decent, they really showed growth, and then we expect that to accelerate so we're pretty hot on Johnson & Johnson now.

Steve Halpern: One particularly interesting portfolio that you maintain that I haven't seen anywhere else is based on closed-end funds that pay monthly dividends&mdash
