Elizabeth Warren: The market is broken

Elizabeth Warren: 'The game is rigged'   Elizabeth Warren: 'The game is rigged' NEW YORK (CNNMoney) Senator Elizabeth Warren says she picked up a lot of her feistiness from reading Nancy Drew novels as a kid. Today she believes the most important mystery to solve is how to get the American economy working for someone other than billionaires.

It's a message she's been taking all over the country, and she isn't afraid to call banks, credit card companies and some employers cheats and tricksters.

"The biggest financial institutions figured out they could make a lot of money by cheating people on mortgages, credit cards and payday loans," she told a packed auditorium at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where she spoke alongside New York Times (NYT) columnist Paul Krugman.

The Democrat from Massachusetts even said the market is broken in many regards.

"This is about getting markets to work for real people," she said.

The biggest applause of the night was on three issues that come up frequently in Warren's speeches.

1) Financial regulation: Warren was the driving force behind the creation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau after the 2008 financial crisis. The agency has returned billions of dollars to Americans who were wronged.

"Traffic works better with traffic lights," she explained.

Best Oil Stocks To Invest In Right Now

In her eyes, a true capitalist system would have transparency so consumers could make informed choices. But in a world of "mice type" with pages and pages of fine print that no one reads or understands, the market breaks down.

2) Reducing student loans: Last summer Warren made headlines for arguing that student loans should have the same interest rates that banks get when they borrow money from the Federal Reserve.

This year she's pushing to allow people to re-finance their student loans at the historically low rates currently in place.

As she likes to remind people, "Student loans issued from 2007 to 2012 are on target to produce $66 billion in profit for the United States government."

3) Raising the minimum wage: "No one should work full time and still live in poverty," Warren said.

She uses her own family story to illustrate how critical it is for workers to make a living wage. Her father had a heart attack when she was 12, a! nd her mother had to go back to work in retail at Sears (SHLD) to support the family.

That would be much harder today because a woman working a minimum wage job and trying to support even one child would likely still be in poverty.

Her other big push is for basic worker rights, including allowing workers to talk freely about how much they make and forcing employers that call shift workers in for only a few hours to pay them for at least four hours of work.

Plenty of critics paint Warren as a socialist, but she has her message down.

"We can't have a market that functions unless we have a government that functions. That's the heart of it," she said.

Top 5 Airline Companies To Watch For 2014

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (TheStreet) -- Hundreds of US Airways (LCC) employees are in Washington, lobbying members of Congress to support a planned merger with American (AAMRQ), despite opposition from the Justice Department.

Supporters do not, however, include leaders and members of the International Association of Machinists, the largest union at US Airways, representing about 3,500 mechanics and 5,800 fleet service workers.

"I think it raises a red flag with members of Congress when the largest labor group is not involved with the lobbying," said Bill Wise, president of IAM Local 1725 in Charlotte.

The Justice Department's 57-page complaint opposing the merger focuses on protecting consumers by preserving the low fares offered on some one-stop routes by US Airways. But it doesn't mention that US Airways earns lower revenue per available seat mile on comparable routes than bigger competitors do, and that it compensates for lower revenue by paying its employees less than their peers at bigger rivals. Many employees were to receive contract improvements triggered by the merger: US Airways has estimated the gain in employee compensation at about $400 million annually. The biggest beneficiaries would be US Airways pilots. Pilots from both US Airways and from the former America West -- the two airlines merged in 2005 -- have below-industry standard contracts. East pilots have had bankruptcy contracts since 2003. For them, a merger means a new contract that over six years would provide $1.6 billion worth of benefits, including pay raises of 13% to 35% over existing rates and lump sum payments around $10,000 each. But US Airways mechanics and fleet service workers are looking to make contract gains through negotiations, which have been stalled since their two contracts became amendable 21 months ago on Jan. 2, 2012. IAM members, primarily fleet service workers, picketed Friday at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Talks have been delayed by the airline's merger efforts and by a failed effort by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters to organize the mechanics. That effort began late in 2012 and ended in August, when the Teamsters lost a representation election .

Advisors' Opinion:

Last but not the least is US Airways Group (LCC), in which Y/Cap slightly increased its position, now owning around $7.9 million. U.S. Airways is currently on the minds of many investors, mainly due to its plans to merge with American Airlines parent AMR Corp (AAMRQ.PK). While European regulators approved the merger, the U.S. Department of Justice put a spoke in the wheel, and is trying to block the move. The companies filed a motion to the court to set the trial date for November 12. Amid these actions, U.S. Airways and American Airlines prolonged the outside date at which one of the companies can terminate the proposed merger.

  • [By Tom Sandlow]

Synopsis: As a result of the terms of its bankruptcy and the proposed merger with U.S. Airways (LCC), an equity investment in AMR Corp (AAMRQ.PK) is equivalent to a series of derivatives on LCC. At current market values, AAMRQ is undervalued by approximately 40%. It is possible to create an arbitrage position that should capture this pricing differential over the next 6 months.

Bloomberg News

Ben S. Bernanke said the headwinds that have held back the U.S. economy may be abating, leaving the country poised for faster growth as his tenure as Federal Reserve chairman comes to an end.

“The combination of financial healing, greater balance in the housing market, less fiscal restraint, and, of course, continued monetary policy accommodation bodes well for U.S. economic growth in coming quarters,” Mr. Bernanke said Friday in a speech in Philadelphia. “Of course, if the experience of the past few years teaches us anything, it is that we should be cautious in our forecasts.”

Mr. Bernanke used his remarks to reflect on his eight years as leader of the U.S. central bank, steering the economy through the most severe economic and financial crisis since the 1930s. Policy makers last month trimmed the Fed's monthly bond buying to $75 billion from $85 billion, taking a first step toward unwinding unprecedented stimulus engineered by Mr. Bernanke to put millions of unemployed Americans back to work.

x86: With regards to the specific x86 server business, it seems that IBM is considering the possibility of fully divesting it. According to Morgan Stanley, the server business generated about $4.9 billion of the company's $15.4 billion in server sales last year. This enormous volume is due to the fact that IBM may be producing the overall market's highest volumes, at the lowest profit level; which suggests this segment is doomed. Finally, IBM has a history of aggressive shifts to areas with better growth prospects and margins. For example, the company agreed to sell off the PC business to Lenovo (LNVGF.PK) at a moment where the PC still seemed attractive.

However, I expect that Intel is at risk of having a significant marketing problem trying to sell a dual core product into a world of quad core phones, even if the dual core part delivers better performance/watt. I further expect that from what is currently known about Bay Trail's GPU (4 EU Gen7 GPU), it is unlikely that -- unless Intel is either using Imagination's (IGNMF.PK) next generation PowerVR 6 or a beefed up Gen7 design for the "Merrifield" SoC -- it will be as competitive with the Snapdragon 800 on the GPU side of things, which could pose as an additional headwind to adoption. I also believe that the Q1 2014 launch curtails any hope that there will be a 14nm smartphone product launched in 2014 (although Mr. Krzanich's comments about "acceleration" could be a source of optimism here), which means that the company's process lead could ultimately prove to be ephemeral in this particular end market. Fortunately, product cycles in this space are short, so it may be okay to have Merrifield be reasonably short lived.

Best Life Sciences Companies To Invest In Right Now

I'd hate to be short Pall (NYSE:PLL), as large companies in the filtration space often seem as close to bulletproof as you can find in the market. So even though sell-side analysts chronically overestimate Pall's free cash flow, investors remain happy with a company that admittedly enjoys strong share and a very lucrative channel of repeat business. While I think Pall's shares remain overvalued, I don't have any particular reason to believe that the shares will sell off dramatically, as the life sciences business should be stable and the industrial business should start improving next year.

On Target In Fiscal Q4
There are always plenty of moving parts within Pall's results, as the company sells into so many different end markets, but the end result performance was pretty much on target.

Revenue fell almost 1% as reported to close the fiscal year, but revenue in local currency terms rose half a point. Life sciences was up 6% for the quarter, as strength in biopharma offset weaker conditions in the Chinese and European food and beverage sector. Customer utilization levels in industrial markets remain a real issue, though, and the company saw a 5% decline (local currency) in industrial sales, with particular weakness in microelectronics and municipal water.

The American long-term care industry has been growing rapidly and will continue doing so for years to come. According to a study from the US Department of Health and Human Services, more than 70 percent of Americans over the age of 65 will need long-term care services at some point in their lives. Anyone over the age of 65 has a 40 percent chance of entering a nursing home and about 20 percent of them will remain there for at least five years.

The size of the 65 and older population jumped by more than 15 percent between 2000 and 2010, compared to just 9.7 percent growth in the population as a whole. That group now makes up about 13 percent of the total population and is forecast to account for more than 16 percent by the end of this decade and 20.2 percent by 2050.

Those trends have spurred huge runs for real estate investment trusts (REIT) that operate assisted-living facilities, rehabilitation centers and nursing homes across the country. While the senior living REITs have been an extremely profitable play on America graying population, their tide is ebbing with the prospect of rising interest rates creating fears that their profitability will be dinged. That creates opportunities for value investors focused on long-term returns, but it means short-term volatility.

In this context, one compelling investment now is Omnicare (NYSE: OCR), a company that provides pharmacy services to long-term care and other medical facilities. Omnicare receives prescription orders from physicians at facilities, reviews them for effectiveness and any potential interactions with other drugs the patient is receiving and then prepares the drugs in specialized individual packages for easy administration.

Omnicare has consultant pharmacists who can regularly review patient charts for potential interactions and duplications or to recommend alternative drugs or formulations that can increase the effectiveness of a patient medications, while also potent

With over 4,000 properties worldwide, and 2013 gross revenue of over $13 billion, Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAR  ) is one hotel company worth watching now. With 18 brands including Marriott Hotels, Ritz Carlton, and others in both the luxury and mass-market segments, the company has been aggressively expanding in the past five years, and its growth in number of properties has helped to spur its growth in profits and share value. Top 10 Promising Companies For 2014

Whatever happened to the dream of commodities futures? They were supposed to turn the ordinary investor’s portfolios into a sophisticated hedge fund, promising stock-like returns with low correlation to equities.

Many seminal studies purporting to show these benefits, followed by the proliferation of mutual funds and exchange-traded portfolio products targeting retail investors, have popularized the strategy.

But now some thought leaders in the investment blogosphere are starting to pick apart the claims made for commodities futures funds, which generally purchase Treasury securities as collateral for futures contracts in energy, agriculture, livestock, industry and precious metals.

Tadas Viskanta of the popular Abnormal Returns blog initiated the latest round of rethinking. Viskanta hearkened back to the hype of 2006, following a study underscoring commodities futures' equity-like performance but negative correlation to stock and bond returns.

This research, by Gary Gorton and K. Geert Rouwenhorst, was “was picked up by multiple media sources as a major discovery,” Viskanta wrote at the time, commenting now that “new ‘discoveries’ in the financial markets are indeed rare.”

Hot Canadian Companies To Buy Right Now: Chimera Investment Corporation (CIM)

Chimera Investment Corporation operates as a real estate investment trust (REIT) in the United States. The company, through its subsidiaries, invests in residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS), residential mortgage loans, commercial mortgage loans, real estate-related securities, and other asset classes. Its targeted asset classes include agency or non-agency RMBS; prime, jumbo prime, and Alt-A mortgage loans; first or second lien loans secured by multifamily properties, mixed residential or other commercial properties, retail properties, office properties, or industrial properties; and asset-based securities (ABS), including commercial mortgage-backed securities, debt and equity tranches of collateralized debt obligations, and consumer and non-consumer ABS. The company has elected to be treated as a REIT for federal income tax purposes and would not be subject to income tax, if it distributes at least 90% of its REIT taxable income to its share holders. Chimera Inve stment Corporation was founded in 2007 and is based in New York, New York.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Because of the requirement to pay out the vast majority of their income, REITs often have extremely high dividend payouts. Mortgage REITs ARMOUR Residential (NYSE: ARR  ) and Chimera Investment (NYSE: CIM  ) use leveraged strategies to produce yields well in excess of 10%, while Omega Healthcare (NYSE: OHI  ) and Senior Housing Properties Trust (NYSE: SNH  ) , which specialize in long-term care facilities and other properties catering to older residents, both have yields between 5% and 6%.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Berkshire isn't the only company where book value plays an important role. In the mortgage REIT realm, the value of the investment portfolio for a given mortgage REIT reduced by the REIT's outstanding debt, sometimes referred to as net asset value rather than book value, gives valuable information about its relative valuation. Industry leader Annaly Capital (NYSE: NLY  ) currently sports a price-to-book ratio of 0.96 based on its most recently provided figures, reflecting in part investor skepticism about whether the REIT's agency-issued mortgage-backed securities will hold their value once the Federal Reserve stops making extensive bond purchases as part of its quantitative easing program. By contrast, Annaly's non-agency-issued counterpart, Chimera Investment (NYSE: CIM  ) , sports a price-to-book ratio of nearly 1.1, indicating a significant premium to the REIT's stated net asset value that could be due to the fact that the Fed hasn't focused its efforts on the alternative securities that Chimera tends to choose for its portfolio.

"Nepotism has never been unknown in American banking," Martin Mayer wrote in The Greatest-Ever Bank Robbery, his 1990 book about the savings-and-loan crisis. While Mayer was referring to American Continental, the notoriously corrupt holding company run into the ground by the infamous Charles Keating in the 1980s, his point rings true today in the case of Annaly Capital Management (NYSE: NLY  ) and its publicly traded portfolio company Chimera Investment (NYSE: CIM  ) .
