Another stock that looks poised to trigger a big breakout trade is Amedisys (AMED), which is engaged in delivering personalized health care services to patients and their families. This stock has been on fire so far in 2013, with shares up a whopping 61%.

If you look at the chart for Amedisys, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways inside of a consolidation chart pattern right above its 50-day moving average at $16.92, with shares moving between $16.04 on the downside and $18.70 on the upside. Shares of AMED are now starting to spike higher right above its 50-day, and it's quickly moving within range of triggering a big breakout trade above the upper-end of its! recent range.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in AMED if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $18.05 to its 52-week high at $18.70 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 444,954 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then AMED will set up to enter new 52-week-high territory, which is bullish technical price action. Some possible upside targets off that breakout are $25 to $27 a share.

Traders can look to buy AMED off any weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its 50-day at $16.92 a share or below more near-term support at $16.62 a share. One can also buy AMED off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Last week, we saw home-health sector stocks like Amedisys (NASDAQ: AMED  ) and Gentiva Health Solutions (NASDAQ: GTIV  ) get clobbered because the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services recommended a 1.5% reduction in Medicare reimbursements each year between 2014 and 2017. With Amedisys and Gentiva reliant on Medicare for more than 80% and 90% of their revenue, respectively, it could put hospitals that rely on government reimbursements in a growth bind.

That zipping sound you hear is home-health providerAmedisys‘ (AMED) 24% surge on news thatprivate-equity giant Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co.has a stake of more than 8% in the stock.

CRT Capital analyst Sheryl Skolnick, a critic of company management, upgrades to “fair value” this morning and essentially tells clients to get out of KKR’s way, since the firm could end up ushering in a new board and management:

There are times when this analyst will ‘take on’ sharehold! ers with ! differing views and there are times when she knows, from long experience, not to even think about it. This is one of the latter times ….

We know that when activists get involved, strange and interesting things happen, even (especially?) with entrenched managements. For the record, we think it unlikely that this part of KKR will take AMED private: filing a 13-D that almost surely takes the stock up would be that act of amateurs, in our view, not the act of a savvy firm like KKR. Some may conclude from the language of the 13-D that KKR may not actually become active. We reviewed it and found it nearly identical to other activists’ initial statements: then things changed. Thus, a new Board and management does seem likely and is indeed the strategy we advocated in our 4/3/13 report and THAT is the root cause of our upgrade.

But for the 13-D we would NOT have upgraded. Indeed, we were in the midst of preparing a strong reiteration of our view that AMED cannot be fixed by this CEO and his Board. We reiterate that view here and strongly suspect that any activist likely has or will reach that same conclusion.

What: Shares of home health providers Amedisys (NASDAQ: AMED  ) , Gentiva Health Services (NASDAQ: GTIV  ) , andLHC Group (NASDAQ: LHCG  ) swooned as much as 28%, 20%, and 15%, respectively, following a public proposal by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMS, late yesterday that in-home health care reimbursements be cut by 1.5% in 2014.

Morgan Stanley nabs $1.5B J.P. Morgan team

Bloomberg

Morgan Stanley has landed a $1.5 billion team from J.P. Morgan Securities LLC in the latest in a series of high-profile, late-summer acquisitions.

Scott Siegel, a Barron's top 1,000 adviser, and his team of Mehmet Kirdar, Michael O'Hara and Joseph Carmody, have joined Morgan Stanley's New York City office, the company announced Tuesday.

The team moved last Friday from J.P. Morgan, with the exception of Mr. Carmody, who was recruited from UBS Financial Services Inc.

Known as the SKOC team at Morgan Stanley, the group has $6.1 million of trailing 12-month production, according to the firm.

Doug Morris, a J.P. Morgan spokesman, declined to comment.

Mr. Siegel and his branch manager, Michael Simeone, were not immediately available Tuesday.

A March Barron's profile said Mr. Siegel manages balanced portfolios and favors high-yield bonds of five to eight years, together with dividend and value stocks.

Last Friday, Morgan Stanley landed Atlanta-based Jason Moss, a former Bank of America Merrill Lynch broker with $130 million in assets, in addition to the Coral Gables, Fla., team of Al Maulini and Joseph Torano, who managed $121 million at HSBC Securities Inc.

Last Thursday, Morgan picked up brothers Frank and Donald Marano from Raymond James Financial Services Inc. The Allentown, Pa., duo manages $100 million.

Opening Print and S&P Levels to Watch

The Asian markets closed lower (Shanghai Comp. -2.05%) and Europe is trading modestly lower. Today is the first day of the long-awaited two-day Federal Open Market Committee meeting. While today will be prone to headline news, the real headlines do not start until Wednesday's FOMC meeting announcement, with forecasts at 1:00 CT and the Bernanke press conference at 1:30. We were right about selling the early rally and a low-volume grind, but this time it was a downward grind. Don't listen to anyone; the real reason the ESZ (S&P e-mini futures) sold off was simple. All the buying associated with Larry Summers headlines was done Sunday night into Monday morning. By the time the S&P futures opened at 8:30 CT the buying was used up and what was left was all sell stops and sell programs. It was definitely a case of selling the news. One by one the S&P is knocking down all the upside obstacles and making bad news into good. That is how it works. It's not just picking levels on your charts to buy and sell at. Learning the feel of the S&P can be just as important as a critical support or resistance level. Just two weeks ago the markets were worried about the Fed taper and Syria, and now the S&P has seen its largest weekly gain in eight months. There is definitely a psychological side to the markets at work. Our view: The S&P has closed higher 8 out of the first 10 trading days of September for a total gain of 66.5 handles and has rallied 78.75 handles from its 1625.00 low. It has been a nonstop buy fest, but it's all short covering. Based on that price action, one would think there is probably more selling around for today. We again lean to selling the early rally and buying weakness. The S&P futures may not close above the contract highs today, but we can't rule out that possibility on Wednesday afternoon. There is a congestion of buy stops building up above 1704 vs. the Dec e-mini S&P that runs to the 1712-1715 level. As always, use stops and keep an eye on the 10-handle rule. Don't forget to catch MrTopStep on The Closing Print video found under the OptionsTV page (top bar) on Options Profits. SAN FRANCISCO -- Can the rise of crowdfunding bring money pooling to the masses?

With an explosion of consumer electronics, food trucks and art projects financed by crowds of individuals online, crowdfunding is in a boom. Startup Crowdtilt wants to make crowdfunding popular for everyday activities -- such as group-funded parties, trips or gifts -- and plans to take the business worldwide.

"It's typically really hard for a group to pool resources. It will resonate with people for smaller bite-sized campaigns," says Crowdtilt CEO and co-founder James Beshara.

The Startup, based here, today announced a $23 million second round of funding led by Andreessen Horowitz that includes SV Angel, Sean Parker and Silicon Valley Bank. Crowdtilt plans to use the investment to hire employees and stake out its international expansion.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sean Williams]

    Leave the wrapper on
The returns on confectioner Tootsie Roll Industries (NYSE: TR  ) have certainly been sweet for investors over the past year. You have to go back to the summer of 2010 to find sugar prices that were as low as they are now, which has played a good part in helping Tootsie Roll keep that aspect of its costs down. But taking a bigger view of what's going on with Tootsie Roll and comparing that to its current valuation creates a sour taste in my mouth.

  • [By Rich Smith]

At the same time, tiny Tootsie Roll (NYSE: TR  ) may see its sales grow as little as 13% through 2016. Could it be that in the candy industry, bigger is better? Does Hershey lack the scale to compete effectively against mammoth Mondelez?

For those traders who were lucky and smart enough to be in an Arotech Corporation (NASDAQ:ARTX) before today, then congratulations - you're up at least 38% on your position. Now it's time to get out. Conversely, if you're looking for a new name to get into (or perhaps looking for a place to park your ARTX proceeds), then you may want to consider Pazoo Inc. (OTCBB:PZOO)... a tiny online retailer of health and fitness goods. PZOO has dropped several tell-tale hints that more upside is on the way.

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Treehouse Foods (NYSE: THS  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

  • [By TaniaC]

The consumer staples sector is facing several hiccups over the past few quarters as consumers are spending less and demand is declining. Investors can still expect a healthy return in this sector by investing in TreeHouse Foods Inc. (THS) as this player is playing well despite of all odds.

  • [By Vinay Singh]

On the other hand, food manufacturer TreeHouse Foods (THS) has witnessed higher demand for its products. Its fourth-quarter revenue surged 11.4% over last year as revenue clocked in at $660.3 million. The acquisitions of Cains Foods and Associated Brands last year and an increase in volumes drove this revenue gain. The company also recently acquired Associated Brands, which added to its private-label food product portfolio. Also, TreeHouse's launch of specialty teas enabled it to expand its single-serve coffee business. Hence, this company provides tough competition to other food players.

Also interesting is that the duration of rising rate environments is distinctly shorter after 1982. The average duration declines to 14 months from 40 months prior to 1982. A possible explanation could be changes in the monetary mechanism influencing interest rates. In 1982, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) first referenced a targeted federal funds rate.7

  • [By CanadianValue]

Former Philadelphia Fed President Edward Boehne elegantly described the approach at a Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting in late 1989:

ow, sooner or later, we will have a recession. I don think anybody around the table wants a recession or is seeking one, but sooner or later we will have one. If in that recession we took advantage of the anti-inflation (impetus) and we got inflation down from 4 1/2 percent to 3 percent, and then in the next expansion we were able to keep inflation from accelerating, sooner or later there will be another recession out there. And so, if we could bring inflation down from cycle to cycle just as we let it build up from cycle to cycle, that would be considerable progress over what wee done in other periods in history./p>

4 Biotech Stocks Under $10 Making Big Moves

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- At Stockpickr, we track daily portfolios of stocks that are the biggest percentage gainers and the biggest percentage losers.

Stocks that are making large moves like these are favorites among short-term traders because they can jump into these names and try to capture some of that massive volatility. Stocks that are making big-percentage moves either up or down are usually in play because their sector is becoming attractive or they have a major fundamental catalyst such as a recent earnings release. Sometimes stocks making big moves have been hit with an analyst upgrade or an analyst downgrade.

Regardless of the reason behind it, when a stock makes a large-percentage move, it is often just the start of a new major trend -- a trend that can lead to huge profits. If you time your trade correctly, combining technical indicators with fundamental trends, discipline and sound money management, you will be well on your way to investment success.

With that in mind, let's take a closer look at a several stocks under $10 that are making large moves to the upside today.

Amarin

Amarin (AMRN) is a biopharmaceutical company that commercializes and develops therapeutics to improve cardiovascular health. This stock closed up 6% to $5.62 in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $5.39-$5.70

52-Week Range: $5.12-$14.97

Tuesday's Volume: 9.30 million

Three-Month Average Volume: 3.74 million

Shares of AMRN ripped higher on Tuesday after H.C. Wainwright upgraded the stock.

From a technical perspective, AMRN gapped up sharply here and broke out above some near-term overhead resistance at $5.59 with monster upside volume. This stock has been downtrending badly for the last six months, with shares dropping from over $8 to its recent low of $5.12. During that move, shares of AMRN have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of AMRN have now started to rebound off that $5.12 low and are quickly moving within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if AMRN manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $5.74 to its 50-day at $5.88 and then once it takes out more resistance at $6.20 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in AMRN as long as it's trending above some key near-term support levels at $5.13 to $5.12, and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 3.74 million shares. If that breakout hits soon, then AMRN will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $7.17 to $7.30. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put $8 to $8.50 within range for shares of AMRN.

Best Electric Utility Stocks To Invest In 2015

Coronado Biosciences

Coronado Biosciences (CNDO), a clinical stage biopharmaceutical company, focuses on the development of immunotherapy biologic agents for the treatment of autoimmune diseases and cancer. This stock closed up 2.7% to $9.13 in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $8.85-$9.58

52-Week Range: $4.00-$12.70

Tuesday's Volume: 1.31 million

Three-Month Average Volume: 419,038

From a technical perspective, CNDO trended up here right above some near-term support at $8.79 with heavy upside volume. This move is starting to push shares of CNDO within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if CNDO manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $9.60 to $10.20 and then once it takes out more resistance at $10.35 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CNDO as long as it's trending above its 50-day at $8.52 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 419,038 shares. If that breakout hits soon, then CNDO will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $11 to $11.81. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put its all-time high at $12.70 into range for shares of CNDO.

Vical

Vical (VICL) engages in the research and development of biopharmaceutical products based on its DNA delivery technologies for the prevention and treatment of serious or life-threatening diseases. This stock closed up 5.8% to $1.62 in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $1.53-$1.63

52-Week Range: $1.37-$4.74

Tuesday's Volume: 7.28 million

Three-Month Average Volume: 1.53 million

From a technical perspective, VICL bounced higher here right above its recent 52-week low at $1.37 with monster upside volume. This stock recently gapped down big from $3.75 to $1.37 with huge downside volume. That move has now pushed shares of VICL into extremely oversold territory, since its current relative strength index reading is 21.80. Oversold can always get more oversold, but it's also an area where a stock can experience a powerful bounce higher from.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in VICL as long as it's trending above its 52-week low at $1.37 and then once it sustains a move or close above Tuesday's high of $1.63 with volume that hits near or above 1.53 million shares. If we get that move soon, then VICL will set up to re-fill some of its previous gap down zone that started at $3.75. Some possible upside targets if VICL gets into that gap with volume are $2.25 to $2.50.

Siga Technologies

Siga Technologies (SIGA), a biopharmaceutical company, is engaged in the design, discovery and development of NNR Therapeutics, a new class of drugs for the treatment of diseases and disorders of the central nervous system. This stock closed up 1.7% to $3.56 in Tuesday's trading session.

Tuesday's Range: $3.50-$3.59

52-Week Range: $2.33-$4.60

Thursday's Volume: 88,000

Three-Month Average Volume: 270,742

From a technical perspective, SIGA bounced modestly higher here right above some near-term support at $3.32 with lighter-than-average volume. This bounce is starting to push shares of SIGA within range of triggering a big breakout trade. That trade will hit if SIGA manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.74 to $4 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in SIGA as long as it's trending above support at $3.32 or above its 50-day at $3.20 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 270,742 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then SIGA will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.43 to its 52-week high at $4.60. Any high-volume move above $4.60 will then put $5.50 to $6 within range for shares of SIGA.
