Hot Restaurant Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Though shares of Buffalo Wild Wings (NASDAQ: BWLD  ) rose more than 4% in Monday's after-hours trading following a strong quarterly report from the company, the stock fell into a tailspin Tuesday morning after a pair of analyst downgrades stemmed investors' excitement.

Sure enough, while Deutsche Bank raised its price target on the firm to $105 from $95 per share, the market drove shares of B-Wild down more than 4% after analysts at both Sterne Agee and KeyBanc downgraded the stock to "neutral" from "buy."

So what's an investor to do?

The numbers
For the first quarter, while revenue increased 21.2% from the year-ago period to $304.4 million, B-Wild's net earningsactuallydecreased10.2% year over year to $16.4 million. Earnings per diluted share also fell 11.2% to $0.87.

Meanwhile, same-store sales increased 1.4% at Buffalo Wild Wings' company-owned restaurants and 2.2% at franchised locations. While that still fell short of fast-casual competitor Panera Bread (NASDAQ: PNRA  ) , which posted company-owned same-store sales growth of 3.3%, CEO Sally Smith reminded investors that her company still outpaced the negative same-store sales trend prominent in the casual-dining category as a whole. What's more, remember that in February, B-Wild management had said same-store sales for the first six weeks of Q1 weredown 2.8%, so ending Q1 in positive territory reflected a huge improvement for the chain.

5 Best International Stocks To Buy For 2014

After taking early losses yesterday, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) and its compatriots largely recovered by the end of the day. Markets are still down this morning, with the bank following suit at a 0.6% decline at 10 a.m. EDT. Though there may still be some concerns about the overall market and international economies, some news closer to home may help the bank rise later in trading.

A look around the sector
Bank of America isn't the only one seeing red this morning, as its closest competitors continue to struggle toward breakeven as well:

Citigroup (NYSE: C  ) lead the group down, with a 0.9% loss. JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM  ) was close in second at 0.88%. Wells Fargo was still faring better than the others, with a lesser 0.49% loss. The KBW Bank Index (DJINDICES: ^BKX  ) , a broader view of the banking sector, was down 0.69%.

International concerns
As we saw yesterday, the sudden drop in the Japanese markets took a toll on the banks early on, but they mostly recovered by the end of the day. Bank of America only derives 4% of its revenue from the Asian markets, so yesterday's news shouldn't have any long-term effects on the bank's performance. Likewise for JPMorgan, which gets 6% of its revenue from the region. The largest concern in the banking sector was for Citigroup, which produces 18%-20% of its revenue from Asian markets.

Top Construction Stocks To Watch For 2014

In 1905, Charles Henry Robinson spotted a unique opportunity.

After moving west with his family to the North Dakota town of Grand Forks, he soon realized that settlers were in need of supplies. He founded a transportation company with the goal of delivering perishable products to consumers before they spoiled -- a difficult challenge in the horse-and-buggy days.

The company Robinson founded changed with the times, taking advantage of historic advances in the transportation industry. These advances included the first refrigerated truck (without ice) in 1939, the construction of the interstate highway system beginning in 1945, and the deregulation of the trucking industry in 1980.

Deregulation allowed the company freedom in setting its own rates. It also freed up the types of cargo that could be carried and the geographical areas in which the company could operate.

As it's known today, C.H. Robinson (Nasdaq: CHRW) has again changed with the times.

Even now, though, it's far from clear whether the recent rebound has staying power. Earlier this month, peer Vulcan Materials (NYSE: VMC  ) reported 5% lower shipments of aggregates, although rising prices helped offset the impact, and the company noted double-digit-percentage increases in shipments to hot housing areas including Arizona, California, and Florida. Similarly, Cemex (NYSE: CX  ) posted a substantial loss for its March quarter on with 5% lower revenue, but the Mexican company pointed to strength in the U.S. and Asian markets as offsetting weakness in Mexico, Europe, and Latin America.

URS Corp.'s(URS) first-quarter earnings slumped 63% on a sharp drop in revenue related to some government contracts that the engineering company is winding down. Shares fell 7.1% to $43.85 premarket.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Despite the broad market's bullish bias right now, not every name looks equally strong. URS (URS) makes a good case in point. While the $4 billion engineering stock has fared well year-to-date, it's starting to look "toppy" from here.

The double top pattern is a price setup that's formed by two swing highs that peak at the same level. Those two tops happened in early September and then again in the middle of this month. A move through $52 is the signal that it's time to be a seller in URS. While this stock still has a little while to go before it goes into bear mode, I'd be paying close attention to that $52 support line if I were a shareholder in this name.

The inverse head and shoulders pattern is a reversal pattern that indicates exhaustion among sellers. It's formed by two swing lows that bottom out around the same level (the shoulders), separated by a deeper low (the head). The buy signal comes on a move through the neckline, which is right at $950. The fact that NVR's neckline level comes right at a big round number price is significant; it means that if shares can catch a bid above $950, more investor eyes are going to be fixated on a move through that level.

Here again, momentum adds some confidence to this trade. RSI has been in an uptrend since the pattern started forming in shares, and it's held that uptrend on the pullbacks. Since momentum is a leading indicator of price, there's clearly an upside bias in this stock right now.

Packaging and Containers: Investing Essentials

Historically, many packaging and container stocks have proven to be excellent long-term holdings for investors, providing both growth and income prospects. But investors should understand the basics of the industry before they scour the segment for opportunities. Here are the basics investors need to know.

Approximately half of every dollar of Coca-Cola's product costs come from packaging. Image source: Coca Cola.

What is the packaging and container industry?

The packaging and container industry encapsulates any business related to the manufacturing of containers or packaging services. Some businesses that fall under this sector are pure plays that either provide packaging services or build containers, but some conduct business with a mix of both container manufacturing and packaging services.

Further, the container and packaging industry sometimes excludes container and packaging companies engaged solely in paper and cardboard stock manufacturing, as The New York Times does in its classification of businesses that fall under this industry. But this isn't always the case -- the World Packaging Organisation chooses to include these businesses in the packaging and container industry. In this article, paper and cardboard stock manufacturing related to packaging is included.

Examples of container businesses in the industry include manufacturers of pharmaceutical containers, metal cans, glass bottles, and steel containers. Examples of packaging services provided by businesses in this industry include packaging for private label products using containers like those just mentioned, along with paper and board packaging.

How big is the packaging and container industry?

Due to the many overlapping characteristics of the packaging and container industry with logistics services and other similar sectors, it's difficult to estimate the exact size of the industry. But a 2008 report from World Packaging Organisation forecasted an estimated $563.8 billion in the global packaging market in 2009.

Other reports seem to suggest that World Packaging Organisation's estimate of global revenue may be too conservative. For example, IBISWorld reports $830 billion in global plastic product and packaging manufacturing revenue projected for 2014, a 2.8% growth rate from 2009 to 2014. Further, it reports 2014 sales of $470 billion for global cardboard box and container manufacturing, growing at 1.3% annually between 2009 and 2014. Together, these two sectors equal $1.3 billion in global revenue. And even these two sectors still exclude some sales in the broader packaging and container industry, like those related to metal and glass containers.

Based on varying reports, it's reasonable to estimate that global revenue for the packaging and container industry is somewhere between $1 trillion and $2 trillion.

How does the packaging and container industry work?

The food and beverage and household products markets account for the largest portion of business in the packaging and container industry.

It's not surprising, therefore, that paper and board packaging, used to ship and store many products that fall under these categories, is the most common material used in the sector. Paper and board represent approximately 39% of world packaging consumption, according to estimates from World Packaging Organisation.

After paper and board packaging, plastic, metal, and glass account for an estimated 30%, 18%, and 7% of sales, respectively, World Packaging Organisation said in its 2008 report. The rest falls under "other."

The industry has characteristics of a highly competitive environment. Representative of the commodity-like nature of the container and packaging industry, the sector's net margin of 5% is considerably smaller than the 8% net profit margin the broader consumer goods sector boasts. With very few ways to differentiate itself enough in order to convince a meaningful number of businesses to pay premium prices in high volumes, exceptional operational efficiency and scale are relied on heavily in the industry to achieve above-average returns on equity. Responding to pressures, efficiency and quality control efforts like Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma are commonly utilized in the sector, Value Line reports.

What are the drivers of the packaging and container industry?

While some of the simple, low-margin packaging and container businesses may provide investors with a fairly defensive investment profile for economic headwinds, the broader industry is largely tied to the health of the economy. With food and beverage and household good products accounting for the largest portion of the industry's sales, wavering discretionary income can reduce spending in these categories, putting pressure on the industry. The broader economy, therefore, is definitely a key driver for the sector.

World Packaging Organisation cites a several other factors as key drivers to growth of the industry, including rising preferences for conveniences, health awareness, and brand enhancement and differentiation. Consider these examples:

On on-the-go lifestyle is spurring greater demand for convenience food packaging. Health awareness is driving growth in sales of bottled water across the globe. Packaging innovation is increasingly important for businesses in consumable goods to stand out.

Going forward, emerging markets will become an increasingly important venue for growth opportunities in the industry as their GDPs increase robustly.

When at First It Doesn't Succeed, Walmart Tries, Tries Again

Jeff Chiu/APA Walmart representative demonstrates the now-discontinued Scan & Go mobile application on a smartphone at a Walmart store in San Jose, Calif. NEW YORK -- Walmart thought shoppers would jump at the opportunity to use a smartphone app to scan items they want to buy as they walk through store aisles. In theory, they could speed through self-checkout. But customers had trouble using the "Scan & Go" app during tests in 200 stores, so Walmart nixed it. Instead of looking at the app as a failure, though, Walmart took what it learned from "Scan & Go" to create another service: It found that customers like being able to track their spending, an insight that became the impetus for a program that enables shoppers to store electronic receipts. The story behind "Scan & Go" illustrates how traditional retailers increasingly are using the nimbler approach to innovating that Silicon Valley startups are known for. Rather than perfecting a program before rolling it out -- as most retailers do -- they're doing more testing and refining as they go along. If the tests work, they're rolled out nationally. If they don't, retailers shutter them and incorporate what they learn into other projects. The test-and-learn approach comes as retailers face intense competition for U.S. shoppers, many of who are still struggling financially. Walmart, for instance, has had sales declines at its established U.S. discount stores for over a year. The industry also is fighting to keep pace with rapidly changing technology and online retailers like Amazon.com that lure customers with low prices and beefed up services. "Retailers need to fail often and learn quickly and adapt and then adopt," said Lori Schafer, executive adviser at SAS Institute, which creates software for retailers. Here's a look at some Walmart tests and what it's learning from them: Delivery The Details: Walmart is testing same-day delivery of groceries, fresh produce and other products in San Jose and San Francisco in California and Denver. Shoppers select a time slot and their items are delivered on the same day if ordered by 8 a.m. Delivery fees range from $3 to $10. It's also testing same-day delivery of only general merchandise like toys and TVs in Northern Virginia, Philadelphia and Minneapolis if ordered by noon. Customers pay $10 for an unlimited number of items. In January, Walmart began offering customers the option to order online and pick up their items in stores in Denver. What Happened: Walmart Stores (WMT), which is based in Bentonville, Arkansas, said that same-day delivery has been well received. But in Denver, the pickup option is growing faster than home delivery. Executives reason that shoppers don't want to be holed up at home waiting for deliveries. It doesn't have any plans to roll it out nationally yet. Lessons Learned: Ravi Jariwala, a Walmart spokesman, said the retailer is encouraged by the results of the tests. "We're trying to understand how we can provide convenient options for customers to shop online for groceries," he said. Subscription Service The Details: In late 2012, Walmart launched Goodies.co, a mail snack subscription service that lets shoppers taste five different surprise snacks that weren't sold on the discounter's shelves for a monthly fee of $7. Walmart then solicited feedback from customers in the site's social community so that it could use the responses to spot food trends. What Happened: Goodies.co closed down a year after it was launched even as the subscription business has been a hot area as companies test shoppers' appetites to have everything from socks to razors to beauty products delivered on a regular basis. For some services, the exact products remain a mystery until they're shipped. Walmart declined to elaborate, but analysts say Walmart customers weren't interested in paying for surprise items. "I think any subscription service Walmart puts forth has to be aimed at the sweet spot of their shopper -- straight up groceries and toiletries," said Scott Shamberg, a managing director at Chicago-based TPN, a retail marketing agency. Lessons Learned: Walmart said it learned how to interact with customers in soliciting feedback on new products and launched an invitation-only review program for the winter holidays to get input on a curated list of products. It's working on another iteration of product reviews. 3-D Printing The Details: Last November, Walmart's U.K. operation, ASDA, began testing 3-D printing technology that allows shoppers to get 8-inch figurines themselves. The cost: 60 pounds, or $100. The service moved around from various stores, but in June, was officially launched at one in Manchester. What Happened: ASDA spokesman Russell Craig said the test has been so popular that the retailer is considering rolling it out to other stores. "It's become the new family portrait," he said. Some of Walmart's Sam's Club stores also are testing 3-D programs. Last month, at the newly opened Sam's Clubs in Montgomery, Illinois, and another outside Fort Worth, Tex., 3-D printers scanned shoppers' faces and then they had resin printouts of their heads placed on action figure-sized bodies of one of three Marvel characters.

Best Income Companies To Own For 2014

No doubt Tesla Motors (NASDAQ: TSLA  ) stock got quite a charge after announcing the company's first-ever profit 芒 a 24% jump between market close on Wednesday and market close on Thursday, and by Friday morning it leapt a further 13%.

I can imagine the Tesla team in the boardroom spraying champagne over themselves at the investors' buying frenzy. And I can see them thumbing their noses at the nay-saying short sellers.

But I have been staring at Tesla's income statement and I just cannot make the company's proclaiming a profit of $15 million coincide with my own concept of fiscal reality.

First off, the income statement shows an operating loss of $5.6 million dollars. After adding back in "other income" of $17.1 million and accounting for interest earned, interest paid, and provision for income tax, we get a net profit of $11.2 million.

There is nothing on the income statement showing a profit of $15 million.

Not only that, but the "other income" item includes $10.7 million from the one-time elimination of the Department of Energy's common stock warrant liability. Take that away and we're left with a profit of $0.5 million.
