Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Selena Maranjian]

Exchange-traded funds offer a convenient way to invest in sectors or niches that interest you. If you'd like to add some clean-energy-related stocks to your portfolio, the PowerShares WilderHill Clean Energy Portfolio ETF (NYSEMKT: PBW  ) could save you a lot of trouble. Instead of trying to figure out which companies will perform best, you can use this ETF to invest in lots of them simultaneously.

    The basics
ETFs often sport lower expense ratios than their mutual fund cousins. The PowerShares ETF's expense ratio -- its annual fee -- is 0.70%. The fund is fairly small, too, so if you're thinking of buying, beware of possibly large spreads between its bid and ask prices. Consider using a limit order if you want to buy in.

Pending Home Sales Rise in April but Miss Forecasts

Top 5 Oil Stocks To Invest In Right Now

Pending Home Sales Show Signs of Stabilizing Matthew Staver/Bloomberg via Getty Images WASHINGTON -- More Americans signed contracts to purchase homes in April than the prior month. But the pace of buying is still weaker than last year, as higher prices and relatively tight supplies have limited sales. The National Association of Realtors said Thursday that its seasonally adjusted pending home sales index rose 0.4 percent to 97.8 last month. The index remains 9.2 percent below its level a year ago. Pending sales are a barometer of future purchases. A one- to two-month lag usually exists between a signed contract and a completed sale. The index indicates that home buying has barely increased in May. The gain in signed contracts partly reflects the slight decline in mortgage rates and the economic rebound from the brutal winter. But prices have risen by 12.4 percent year-over-year, according to Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index. That has put home ownership out of reach for a growing share of Americans who are stuck with stagnant incomes in the aftermath of the Great Recession. The number of signed contracts increased in the Northeast and Midwest month-to-month, suggesting that a modest weather-based rebound has occurred. However, pending sales dropped last month in the West and South, a sign to many economists that the price increases have muted buying activity more than nasty weather. "The end of the severe winter weather will not bring with it a sustained revival in the housing market," said Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics. "The real problem is last year's massive deterioration in affordability." Would-be buyers have gotten some help in recent weeks from falling mortgage rates. Average rates for 30-year, fixed mortgages declined for the fifth straight week to 4.12 percent, according to mortgage buyer Freddie Mac. Still, rates remain above their lows of 3.51 percent a year ago. The rising rates in the second half of 2013 and higher home prices appear to have reduced the pool of potential homebuyers. The Realtors said last week that sales rose 1.3 percent in April from March to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.65 million. Purchases of homes over the past 12 months have dropped 6.8 percent.

Save of the Day: Finding lowest flight prices

Today in my continued journey to save you time and money, we talk travel!

An airline's website never paints the full picture when it comes to price. In fact, if you're searching for flights on a tight budget, the last place I ever recommend starting your search is with an airline.

One of my favorite free resources called "Sky Picker" takes what we know about airline bookings and flips it with a more frugal spin. If you want to get away but don't care where you're going (ideal for a spontaneous trip or adventure), Sky Picker also comes to the rescue.

It's hard to believe a site so simple is such a great way to save but without the bells and whistles, bargains come front and center. Check out the video above for tips on how to save on your next flight. I recently had a chance to test this website for the travel series I host for USA Today Travel called "Work Your Perks" and I'm now booked on several flights.

Why GM recall death toll will rise

cobalt crash

A Chevrolet Cobalt involved in a fatal crash in March 2010.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) The death toll in General Motors' faulty ignition switch recall is 13, making it one of the deadliest recalls in recent years. Sadly, that toll is likely to climb.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said last week that it expects its investigation to reveal the final toll is higher. The 13 deaths are GM's internal estimate, not verified by outside investigators.

GM spokesman Alan Adler said the company investigation is ongoing, and that it will adjust the number if there is evidence of other deaths.

Right now, for instance, the GM count does not include anyone who was killed in the back seat of a car with an ignition problem, because the company is only looking at victims who might have been saved if an airbag had properly deployed. The faulty ignition switch made the cars susceptible to stalling, which disabled the air bag.

But the stall itself might have caused a fatal crash, according to Clarence Ditlow, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety. People could have been killed when the car lost control, whether or not the lack of an air bag played a role in their death.

Hot Paper Companies To Watch In Right Now

Neither GM nor NHTSA has released a full listing of the 13 people GM is counting as killed by the ignition problem. But Democratic House investigators have released their own list, and there is evidence that many people who died in recalled cars involved in accidents are not on that list.

Adler also said that one of the deaths was from a Canadian crash. However, the Canadian transportation ministry said Tuesday that it is investigating at least two fatal crashes.

The current recall is the deadliest since the 51 fire deaths that NHTSA said were due to problems with a gas tank on 1993 to 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees and 2002 to 2007 Jeep Libertys. Chrysler long denied that those gas tanks had a design flaw. But, with a strong push from NHTSA, Chrysler recalled the SUVs for inspections and upgrades.

Ditlow said the GM recall could top that death total. "The final proven total will be at least 50," he said.

Mary! Barra's bumpy ride as GM CEO   Mary Barra's bumpy ride as GM CEO

The overwhelming majority of car and truck recalls do not involve accidents that caused deaths. GM has had 28 other recalls accounting for more than 10 million U.S. vehicles so far this year, and the company says it knows of no deaths associated with any of those problems.

On the day that she testified before Congress about the recall, GM CEO Mary Barra met with the families of 11 crash victims and apologized for the delay in ordering the recall. But only three of those families have someone who is on the congressional investigator's list.

Also not on the congressional list is Brooke Melton, whose family won an out-of-court settlement with GM due to the 2010 crash in which she was killed. It was that lawsuit that revealed the cover-up of the ignition problem by GM and helped prompt the long-delayed recall earlier this year.

The Meltons' lawyer has filed to reopen that case to seek additional damages, charging that new evidence shows GM hid documents about the ignition switch. To top of page

Facebook To Improve Relevance Of Advertisers For Users

Facebook (NYSE: FB) has long be up against a simple problem with Wall St. Investors who want to know if its revenue can every reach a point at which the company’s $100 billion valuation can be justified. Recent movement in the stock to record highs would indicates that it has added to its army of faithful investors. Now, it needs to clear another hurdle. Its users, in many cases, resent having messages all over what they consider their private pages–whether they actually “own” these pages or not.

Perhaps, Facebook reasons, if advertising is more relevant, users will be more accepting. The theory is flawed to the extent that members will accept any environment in which there is any advertising at all. Nonetheless, Facebook released a new ad policy:

The goal of News Feed is to deliver the right content to the right people at the right time. Our goal with the ads we show in News Feed is no different.

Every time someone visits News Feed, we choose between thousands of ads to determine the best ones to show – whether it's from a local business, a well-known brand or a mobile app developer. We aim to show people the most relevant ads based on things such as their interests and the Pages they like.

To choose the right ad, we listen to both people and marketers.

Marketers tell us which people they think will be interested in their ad. For example, a restaurant might tell us to show an ad to people living in the same city aged 18 to 35. Marketers also tell us how much they are willing to pay to show an ad – which suggests how much they want to reach a specific audience.

People also tell us what types of ads they want to see and don’t want to see. When a person interacts with an ad (clicks, likes, comments on, or shares), News Feed learns that these ads are relevant for them. When someone hides an ad, News Feed learns that that person wants to see less of those types of ads.

In addition to improving the quality of the ads themselves, we are also continuously trying to optimize when and where we're showing ads

We are currently working on some updates to the ads algorithm to improve the relevance and quality of the ads people see.

When deciding which ad to show to which groups of people, we are placing more emphasis on feedback we receive from people about ads, including how often people report or hide an ad.

That means people should see ads that are increasingly relevant to them, and fewer ads that they might not be interested in.

For marketers, this means we are showing ads to the people who might want to see them the most. For example, if someone always hides ads for electronics, we will reduce the number of those types of ads that we show to them.

This means that some marketers may see some variation in the distribution of their ads in the coming weeks. Our goal is to make sure we deliver the most relevant ads, which should mean the right people are seeing a specific ad campaign. This is ultimately better for marketers, because it means their messages are reaching the people most interested in what they have to offer.

We'll continue to listen to feedback so we can keep improving the quality of ads in News Feed. Stay tuned for more.

Facebook has taken a huge share of the display ad market in the U.S. which has been estimated as high as 25%. Many experts believe this will grow at the expense of market share held by portals and other websites with massive traffic. However, ad relevance remain a huge hurdle for users, which means it is one for marketers as well.

3 Huge Stocks on Traders' Radars

BALTIMORE (Stockpickr) -- Put down the 10-K filings and the stock screeners. It's time to take a break from the traditional methods of generating investment ideas. Instead, let the crowd do it for you.

>>5 Stocks Under $10 Set to Soar

From hedge funds to individual investors, scores of market participants are turning to social media to figure out which stocks are worth watching. It's a concept that's known as "crowdsourcing," and it uses the masses to identify emerging trends in the market.

Crowdsourcing has long been a popular tool for the advertising industry, but it also makes a lot of sense as an investment tool. After all, the market is completely driven by the supply and demand, so it can be valuable to see what names are trending among the crowd.

While some fund managers are already trying to leverage social media resources like Twitter to find algorithmic trading opportunities, for most investors, crowdsourcing works best as a starting point for investors who want a starting point in their analysis. Today, we'll leverage the power of the crowd to take a look at some of the most active stocks on the market today.

>>5 Stocks Insiders Love Right Now

These "most active" names are the most heavily-traded names on the market -- and often, uber-active names have some sort of a technical or fundamental catalyst driving investors' attention on shares. And when there's a big catalyst, there's often a trading opportunity.

Without further ado, here's a look at today's stocks.

Hewlett-Packard

Nearest Resistance: $33.60

Nearest Support: $31.50

Catalyst: Earnings

First up is technology giant Hewlett-Packard (HPQ). Shares of the $64 billion stock are up more than 6% as I write this afternoon, buoyed by second-quarter earnings numbers that came in line with analyst expectations. H-P earned 88 cents per share last quarter, the same number that Wall Street was hoping for. The firm's cost-cutting measures are drawing buyers this afternoon, following news that the firm plans to lay off as many as 16,000 additional employees, trimming a cost structure that investors have been criticizing of late.

From a technical standpoint, H-P is still consolidating sideways in a price channel. But it's attempting to break out above an important resistance level at $33.60 in today's session. If shares can close above that high water mark, expect and extended rally from this tech name this summer.

Aeropostale

Nearest Resistance: $4

Nearest Support: N/A

Catalyst: Earnings

Teen apparel retailer Aeropostale (ARO) is getting shellacked this afternoon, dragged more than 21% lower in today's session following the firm's first quarter earnings numbers. The firm announced that sales dropped more than 12% for the quarter, as the firm's clothes failed to resonate with fickle teen shoppers. Worse, the firm announced that it expects a bigger loss than previously expected for next quarter.

Technically speaking, this chart is broken. While ARO has been in a downtrend for the better part of the last year, today's double-digit breakdown is pushing shares below the bottom of the downtrending channel that's constrained price action to date. That means that an acceleration in the selloff looks likely. Avoid being a buyer in ARO here.

Aruba Networks

Nearest Resistance: $19

Nearest Support: $16

Catalyst: Earnings

Fiscal third-quarter earnings are to blame for selling in Aruba Networks (ARUN) today: Shares are off more than 15% this afternoon thanks primarily to guidance numbers that missed the mark. While the firm's loss for the quarter narrowed to 18 cents per share, Q4 estimates fell short. That guidance miss is driving selling pressure in the wireless equipment maker today – and the technicals look rough going forward.

ARUN broke down below its trend line support level with today's selling. Support at $16 looks like the next-closest reprieve for shareholders. If you're looking for an opportunity to buy this stock, wait for support to get established at $16 before jumping in.
