As China enters a new phase of economic development, characterized by slower growth, analysts begin to wonder about the future of companies deeply related to state activities. Common knowledge indicates that as the economy growth slows down, activities at the industries associated with that growth will slow too. Nonetheless, that simple take on economics can be deceiving and an analysis of Sinopec (SIN) will uncover considerable growth opportunities. The reasoning is the following. First, the Chinese economy will not stop growing. Second, the slowdown is not a product of model exhaustion, but a mere capacity readjustment. Third, the oil and gas industry will remain a key to continue growing for the Chinese economy. And the priority placed upon the oil and gas is where growth opportunities for the industry lie. Gurus are divided over this position, but their trading activities on Sinopec have not ceased.

Advisors' Opinion:

Margins matter. The more Ansys (Nasdaq: ANSS  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Ansys's competitive position could be.

  • [By Seth Jayson]

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Ansys (Nasdaq: ANSS  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

  • [By GURUFOCUS]

ANSYS, Inc. (ANSS), the market leader in simulation-driven product development software, declined after reporting quarterly results that were negatively impacted by slower end market demand. Despite the near-term headwind, we believe that ANSYS remains the dominant global provider of simulation software and that the company stands to benefit from the ongoing adoption of its simulation tools. We also believe that ANSYS will increasingly use its cash to repurchase its shares, which we believe will generate additional shareholder value.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

$8 billion engineering simulation software maker Ansys (ANSS) is looking tradable too after spending most of the last five months in a sideways slump. Even though ANSS' price action hasn't exactly shown outstanding momentum, the bias is definitely on the side of sellers right now. Here's why.

Ansys is currently forming a rectangle pattern, a consolidation setup that's formed by a pair of horizontal price levels that basically "box in" shares of the stock. In Ansys, the rectangle is formed by resistance above shares at $90 and support down at $84. The breakout signal works just like the ones in BYI and SRCL – a move through the $90 level is the buy signal for shares of Ansys.

Strictly speaking, a move through $84 support is just as strong of a sell signal as the move through $90 is to buy. But the moves leading up to the rectangle pattern have a lot to say about how these setups typically resolve. Since ANSS started consolidating after a move up, a bullish breakout is the likelier outcome here. Either way, don't try to predict what's going to happen in shares; just be ready to react to it.

    5. M&A still hot: Shares of Hanesbrands (HBI)jumped after the company said it planned to acquire French apparel-maker DBA Apparel in an all-cash deal. Mergers and acquisitions activity has spiked this year as companies try to capitalize on their high stock prices by using the cash to buy other companies.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

HanesBrands (HBI) is another name that's posted stellar performance in 2013. But the past few months have been relatively flat for shares of the apparel maker. Here's how to trade it.

HanesBrands has spent the last three months in a rectangle pattern, a price setup that's formed by a horizontal resistance level above shares at $64 and another horizontal support level down at $59. The rectangle gets its name because it essentially "boxes in" shares -- but like the setup in MHK, the buy signal comes on a breakout through the top of the channel at $64. HBI is testing its breakout range in today's trading session.

Whenever you're looking at any technical price pattern, it's critical to think in terms of those buyers and sellers. Rectangles, triangles and other pattern names are a good quick way to explain what's going on in a stock, but they're not the reason it's tradable. Instead, it all comes down to supply and demand for shares.

That $64 resistance level is a price where there has been an excess of supply of shares; in other words, it's a place where sellers have been more eager to step in and take gains than buyers have been to buy. That's what makes a breakout above it so significant. The move means that buyers are finally strong enough to absorb all of the excess supply above that price level.

Don't be early on this trade.

Want Clients to Trust You? You’ve Got 0.05 Seconds

Click to enlarge: The trustworthiness of faces. Source: Jon FreemanIt used to be cliché to say that the first 60 seconds of a meeting results in an enduring judgment about a person’s character — a view reinforced by the aphorism attributed to Will Rogers that you never get a second chance to make a first impression.

But new research published in the Journal of Neuroscience suggests that early estimate may be more than a 1,000 times too long.

The research suggests that the human brain develops an assessment about trustworthiness in a mere 50-millisecond exposure — indeed before even consciously perceiving a person’s face.

Indeed, the study found that inferences of trustworthiness were highly correlated among multiple perceivers, “indicating that facial cues provide reliable signals about another’s underlying disposition,” the study finds.

Perceptions about trust stem from a subcortal region of the brain called the amygdala, and while previous studies have shown the amygdala automatically codes trustworthiness when perceiving faces, what is new about the current study is that such automatic judgments are formed even in the absence of a full focus on the face — in other words, a mere glance is sufficient.

Simple visual cues, such as enlarged white eyes, may trigger a fearful response.

That trigger reaction may have evolved as a means of survival by motivating “appropriate behavioral responses” in reaction to an “evaluation of another’s likelihood to harm or help,” the study says.

Specifically, lower inner brows and shallower cheekbones may signal untrustworthiness, whereas higher inner brows and pronounced cheekbones are cues of trustworthiness, according to New York University professor Jonathan Freeman, one of the study’s authors, reached by ThinkAdvisor.

So what can financial advisors — who cannot do anything about the faces they were born with — do to enhance perceptions of trust among clients and prospective clients?

“Some research suggests faces appearing more trustworthy structurally resemble a happy expression and faces appearing more untrustworthy structurally resemble an angry expression,” Freeman says.

And while a face does not change dramatically over a lifespan, some evidence indicates it is malleable, he adds, indicating that a person can work on himself to trigger greater trust.

“For example, chronic displays of anger could, in theory, lead the face to become angrier at baseline, which in turn may influence automatic, initial responses to the trustworthiness of the face. In that case, the face may be seen as more untrustworthy,” Freeman says.

In contrast, “smiling and displays of joy can convey openness to interaction, which could potentially convey more trust, so long as they are genuine and not forced smiles,” he adds.

But beyond the theoretical potential benefits of that sort of active conditioning, the bottom line may be, as Freud put it, that anatomy is destiny.

“First impressions are highly consequential and difficult to alter, and so one implication of our results is that this initial and automatic response to trustworthiness may be quite important for later social interactions in the real world,” Freeman concludes.

Despite this biological determinism, the realities of how business is done today may provide an out for financial advisors cursed to look like used-car salesmen.

That thought stems from a survey by advisor-vetting site Paladin Registry on how investors find advisors.

Forget the 50 milliseconds. These days investors check out their advisor before they even get that subliminal glimpse — through the trust they impute via their friends and already trusted professionals (e.g. their CPAs) and through their Internet due diligence.

Top Financial Companies For 2015

The Paladin survey of 386 investors found that 75% of respondents used the Internet to research their advisors anonymously.

What’s more, the survey shows, about half investors determined advisor trustworthiness sight unseen — through the Internet (23.9%); testimonials of other professionals (8.8%); references (7.7%); and Finra BrokerCheck (4.9%).

The key factors in finding an advisor were referrals from family, friends and associates (39.5%); the Internet (25.3%); and referrals from CPAs or attorneys (13.4%).

On another trust-related measure, Paladin asked if investors had a preference for large Wall Street firms or not. Respondents, all users of Paladin’s registry, expressed a strong aversion to the big firms — 69%, compared with the 16% that favored them.

FirEye (FEYE) shares jumped more than 20 percent after Thursday's announcement of the $1.05 billion cash-and-stock deal, which FireEye said closed Monday. It unites two companies with relatively new technologies for thwarting cyber attacks, and brings together two of the most-respected executives in the security industry: FireEye CEO Dave DeWalt and Mandiant founder Kevin Mandia. While sales of older anti-virus products have been on the decline, security experts expect strong growth in both FireEye's cloud-based systems for detecting malicious software and Mandiant's software that analyzes cyber attacks. About a year ago the two companies entered into a technology development agreement that made it easier to deploy their products together. With the merger, FireEye will gain Mandiant's team of forensics investigators. "They have these very strong Navy 'cyber' Seals who respond to breaches and are very good at what they do," DeWalt said about Mandiant. He had previously served as chairman of Mandiant's board. "My aim is to create the strongest security company in the world," DeWalt said in an interview. Though 14% revenue growth in a wildly competitive environment like online retail ain't shabby, it's less than half the 29% pace seen a year ago. With PayPal sales growth also easing rapidly, it looks like the company may finally be reaching maturity. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but growth investors are leaving in hordes.

pandora.com Having Pandora (P) fish through its growing digital catalog to surprise music buffs with commercial-free tunes is getting more expensive. Pandora recently announced that the price for its Pandora One service will increase by 25 percent to $4.99 a month for new subscribers starting in May. Existing subscribers paying $3.99 a month will be able to continue at that rate, but the $36 a year premium plan will no longer be available. Will You Pay More? Unlike the groaning that followed the hike in Amazon.com's (AMZN) Prime, there has so far been minimal backlash for Pandora. That's because just 3.3 million of Pandora's 75.3 million active listeners pay for Pandora One. The other 72 million accept the ad blocks and the limited skips (Pandora limits free users to skipping six songs in an hour or 24 over the course of a day). Pandora perpetually tweaks its terms and limitations, but this is the first time that it has increased its Pandora One rate since it was introduced in 2009. Compared to satellite radio that has gone through a pair of increases since 2012 and the annual increases of most cable and satellite television providers, it's hard to paint Pandora as greedy. As Pandora explains in justifying the increase, the royalties that it pays to performers through SoundExchange for subscription listening have soared 53 percent over the past five years. Battle of the Bands It's probably just a coincidence that Spotify lowered its price to select users just days after Pandora's announced hike. Spotify announced on Tuesday that college students -- including two-year colleges and vocational schools -- could pay just $5 a month for its streaming service. It doubles to the $10 a month rate that everyone else pays after they graduate. Spotify is an on-demand platform that lets users pick the tracks that they want to hear and create play lists. Pandora is a music discovery service that crunches algorithms to serve up tracks that it thinks you will like ba

It's been a challenging year for Yahoo! (YHOO), but you wouldn't know it from this stock's price action. Yahoo! has rallied more than 47% year-to-date, buoyed by major changes in the firm's structure -- and conspicuous leadership from CEO Marissa Mayer. But Yahoo!'s new logo is a good metaphor for the transformation at the company: The new logo was announced with much excitement, but most users probably wouldn't have noticed it otherwise.

Arguably paying too much for Tumblr, and still lacking a real unique selling proposition the new Yahoo! looks way too much like the old Yahoo!.

But while this stock built a reputation for being a dot-com era dinosaur, investors neglected the fact that this stock has had a really attractive business all along. Despite some big missteps, Yahoo! remains one of the biggest destinations on the internet, and all those eyes on its Web sites contribute to hefty net profit margins from operations.

Yahoo!'s cash position has been a blessing and a curse for investors in the last few years. A brilliant investment in Alibaba has contributed to a cash and investment position of more than $7.6 billion at last count, covering more than a quarter of YHOO's market cap. While that does help to reduce risk, Yahoo! either needs to figure out internal investments that yield meaningful rates of return, or give the money back to shareholders.

Just don't underestimate this stock's potential in 2013; Yahoo! may be a dinosaur, but at least it's a T-Rex.

Just this year, top activist investors have made a lot of waves in the market. A few of the more prominent examples:

A series of mid-August tweets (the first on Aug. 13) from Carl Icahn, perhaps the best-known activist investor of them all, has helped push Apple stock up 5%. Icahn is urging Apple CEO Tim Cook to step up its stock buyback program. The dramatic announcement that CEO Steve Ballmer would be surrendering the reins to Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) within 12 months was driven in large part by efforts of hedge fund ValueAct. The activist shareholder used its large stake in the company to get a seat on the board. Among the items on ValueAct's agenda was a change at the top. MSFT shot up 7% on the day of the announcement. Activist investor Bill Ackman finally threw in the towel this week on his three-year attempt to revive the fortunes of troubled retailer J.C. Penney. He sold his entire 18% stake, 39 million shares, to Citigroup on Aug. 26 for a loss of some $500 million. The episode has helped erase 50% of the value of Penney stock, although the announcement that Ackman had bailed out did give JCP a 2.5% boost. Dan Loeb had much better luck than Ackman with Yahoo! Inc. (Nasdaq: YHOO). After building up a 5% stake over 2011 and 2012, Loeb pushed for the ouster of CEO Scott Thomson in favor of Marissa Mayer and persuaded the company to sell 7% of its stake in Chinese Internet company Alibaba. Yahoo bought back Loeb's shares in July, but was able to pocket a profit of nearly 80% - as were any YHOO shareholders who were along for the ride. In one of the craziest cases of activist investing, Ackman and Icahn squared off over nutritional-supplement maker Herbalife Ltd. (NYSE: HLF) earlier this year. Ackman shorted the stock while Icahn increased his stake. The fight sparked a lot of short-term volatility, but at this point Icahn is winning big time - HLF is up a whopping 75% since the battle began in February.

Cynk Technology Corp., formerly Introbuzz, Inc., is a development stage-company. The Company intends to develop a social network business. Social networks are Web based services that allow individuals to post a profile and link their profile to other friends and organizations.

The Company intends to develop a database of professional and other business persons, as well as other interested persons in providing and utilizing contacts. As of November 14, 2012, the Company had not generated any revenue.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]

CYNK Technology (CYNK), the mysterious over-the-counter stock that at one point broke a $6 billion market cap, dropped roughly 80 percent in its first trades after a Securities and Exchange Commission halt. The SEC halted CYNK for two weeks following a massive rise in the stock's value -- it had been worth only a few cents per share in June, but it jumped above $21 on July 10. The Belize-based CYNK Technology supposedly operates a social networking site, but filings indicate it only has one employee and virtually no assets. Experts told CNBC the week of the SEC halt that they expected CYNK to fall precipitously after reopening, and its first day of trading is proving those predictions correct. When it was halted, the stock was worth just less than $14 per share, and is now below $3 a share after briefly hovering around $5 earlier Friday morning. An OTC Markets spokeswoman told Reuters that CYNK's shares were not trading on its platform, but were occurring over the phone. Earlier this week Reuters reported that OTC's CEO did not expect CYNK to trade on its platform at all after reopening, as no brokerages would file the required paperwork for the stock to trade on their exchanges. An SEC spokesman said that the organization cannot comment on the status of a company after a suspension period ends, citing an online explanation of the process. That document notes that broker-dealers may not solicit investors to trade the previously suspended OTC stock until they satisfy several regulatory requirements. The SEC warned, however, that "unsolicited" trading may occur after a reopening -- as CYNK is now seeing -- but "even though such trading is allowed, it can be very risky for investors without current and reliable information about the company."

A possible offset to lower PC sales is the that Microsoft has had more time to transition customers to Office 365. While the product carries a lower initial cash outlay -- meaning that sales from Office could see a short-term dip -- the recurring income it generates is a positive over time. Particularly as Microsoft becomes an increasingly important player in cloud computing, the success of the company's cloud-based productivity suite is critical, especially as the company scrambles to insulate itself from a shift to Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) Apps by large numbers of people.

  • [By Chris Neiger]

The first major move in this direction came when Microsoft introduced the Windows Phone OS and the Surface tablet. Bot of those initiatives were obviously a step in the right direction, but they were born out of necessity, rather than innovation. They came because Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) and Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) were already grabbing up large shares of the mobile OS space and Microsoft needed to do something to keep up.

Best Small Cap Stocks To Invest In 2014

There has been plenty of interesting newscoming from the electric vehicle industry as well as from large cap stock Tesla Motors Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) and small cap players like Kandi Technologies Group Inc (NASDAQ: KNDI), HydroPhi Technologies Group, Inc (OTCMKTS: HPTG) and Green Automotive Co (OTCMKTS: GACR):

Tesla Gigafactory Plans Leads to Plenty of Questions. Tesla plans for a Gigafactory are grabbing plenty of attention and talk with Bloomberg noting there could be a bidding contest between short listed states like Texas, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico seeking the 6,500 jobs the $5 billion investment could create while a Forbes contributor asked six questions with one about the factory reported cost where the author speculated:

But it actually pencils out to a little more than two-thirds the cost, on a per GWh basis, of other large battery factories. Clearly, the large scale of the factory will make equipment purchases cheaper. Nevertheless, the estimated cost of the factory seems extremely low and brings into question whether Tesla and its battery partners have some new manufacturing innovations up their sleeves.

    Briefly in the news
And now let's take a quick look at some of the other stories that shaped our week.

OmniVision (NASDAQ: OVTI  ) investors are seeing the big picture. Shares of the image sensor maker moved higher after posting better-than-expected quarterly results. Revenue soared 54%, and OmniVision's profit of $0.31 a share blew away the $0.21 analysts were targeting. Nokia (NYSE: NOK  ) is no longer the leading smartphone seller in Finland. Tech tracker IDC reports that Samsung outsold Nokia in its home country this past quarter. So much for the hometown hero. Vringo (NASDAQ: VRNG  ) got another tech giant to pay up, but it won't be much. The company announced a patent-infringement settlement with Mr. Softy in which Vringo will receive $1 million and enter into a licensing deal with the world's largest software company.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Bryan Murphy]

Well, it would be inaccurate to see patent-defense companies like Vringo, Inc. (NASDAQ:VRNG), InterDigital, Inc. (NASDAQ:IDCC), and Acacia Research Corp. (NASDAQ:ACTG) have been forced into going out of business. But, it wouldn't be inaccurate to say some of these so-called patent trolls are now potentially facing a much bigger legal headwind. Investors of companies like IDCC, ACTG, and VRNG may want to reassess the upside of their holdings, now that new laws regarding patent litigation have all but been put into place.

  • [By Alex Planes]

Investors love stocks that consistently beat the Street without getting ahead of their fundamentals and risking a meltdown. The best stocks offer sustainable market-beating gains, with robust and improving financial metrics that support strong price growth. Does InterDigital (NASDAQ: IDCC  ) fit the bill? Let's take a look at what its recent results tell us about its potential for future gains.

  • [By Eric Volkman]

InterDigital (NASDAQ: IDCC  ) is about to raise its global profile following an international patent licensing deal. The company announced that it has entered an agreement with Spain-based Teltronic Unipersonal for the latter to license a set of its 4G technologies. The terms of the arrangement were not disclosed.

  • [By Holly LaFon]

The most disappointing investment in the portfolio for 2013 was InterDigital (IDCC). This stock declined approximately 28% during the year, despite posting roughly 25% operating margins. Our thesis on IDCC is that the company should benefit from its wireless technology patents as more smartphones and mobile tablets are connected to the in ternet. IDCC creates wireless technology, applies for patents for the technology it creates, and then licenses its technology to manufacturers who produce the aforementioned products. In the past, Nokia, Samsung, Apple, LG, and many other manufacturers hav e licensed the company's technology to use in their products and paid IDCC royalties.

Advisors' Opinion:

I was so scarred by their subsequent crash that when I heard a portfolio manager rhapsodizing about the recent performance of Plug Power Inc (NSDQ: PLUG), Fuelcell Energy Inc (NSDQ: FCEL) and Capstone Turbine Corp (NSDQ: CPST), I could scarcely believe it. These were names that I had not heard in years, names that many investors would like to forget. Indeed, even with the recent run-up in their share prices, the value of these firms today is just a small fraction of what it was back then.
