Dollar Indecisive After Positive U.S. Employment Report

After spiking higher on the news of both non-farm payrolls and unemployment beating expectations, the greenback reversed lower during the New York trading session. U.S. stock indexes also rallied on the news initially and have been able to hold on to some of their gains. The Standard & Poor's 500 index has risen by over 25 percent in 2013.

U.S. Employment Report

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Friday that payrolls increased by 203,000 in November, beating analyst expectations of 180,000. The figure came in modestly higher than October's upwardly revised reading of 200,000.

The November unemployment rate fell to 7 percent, its lowest level in five years, beating analyst expectations of 7.2 percent. The reading for the month of October was 7.3 percent.

The decline in unemployment to 7.0 percent from 7.3 percent was impacted considerably by the return of federal workers after the government shutdown in October.

The broader U-6 unemployment rate fell to 13.2 percent, from 13.8 percent. This measure also includes part-time workers who want to work full-time, marginally-attached workers and those who have stopped looking for work.

The Fed has stated that it won't raise interest rates until after the unemployment rate reaches a threshold of 6.5 percent or lower. However, Fed policymakers have also asserted that reaching 6.5 percent would not necessarily bring about immediate interest rate increases.

U.S. GDP

Yesterday, the Commerce Department reported that in the third quarter, the U.S. economy grew faster than initially estimated. Gross domestic product increased at a 3.6 percent annualized rate, revised higher from an initial estimate of 2.8 percent.

December FOMC Meeting

Analysts are pondering whether the recent positive economic data out of the U.S. is sufficient for the Fed to scale back their $85 billion-a-month bond buying program at the December 17-18 meeting.

While analysts are divided on whether the Fed will taper in December, the odds are likely to have increased after today's employment data. Speaking with Bloomberg TV in late November, James Bullard, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, said, "A strong jobs report, I think, would increase the probability some for a December taper."

    Barclays upgraded share s of Vitamin Shoppe (VSI) today, expressing a confidence in management that was, well, heartwarming.

    Barclays’ analysts Meredith Adler and Sean Kras call Vitamin Shoppe’s management team “thoughtful, deliberate and disciplined” and praise their ability to diversify the business. As a result, they upgraded Vitamin Shoppe to Overweight from Equal Weight two days after Vitamin Shoppe released its earnings.

    But Adler and Kras also spent a good number of words explaining what Vitamin Shoppe isn’t–specifically, it’s not GNC Holdings (GNC):

    [Vitamin Shoppe] said it saw no fundamental change in consumer demand, nor did it feel much pressure from the bad media reports about things like multi-vitamins and fish oil, unlike GNC. [Vitamin Shoppe] has a much broader offering than GNC, however, so weakness in any one category rarely has a major impact on�[Vitamin Shoppe's] overall sales the way it does at GNC. Conversely, it benefits less when there are few very successful products. For example, diet is a far smaller part of the sales mix at�[Vitamin Shoppe] than at GNC. Last year diet had some strong products, but this year there are fewer. GNC�� comps were stronger than�[Vitamin Shoppe's] last year, but we like the stability of�[Vitamin Shoppe's] business, especially in the current environment.

    Shares of Vitamin Shoppe have gained 1.8% to $43.42 at 3:24 p.m., while GNC has risen 0.8% to $37.43.

    HONG KONG (MarketWatch) -- Hong Kong stocks swung between small gains and losses early Thursday after hitting a seven-month high in the previous session, with the Hang Seng Index (HK:HSI) down less than 0.1%. Cecil Bancorp, Inc. is the holding company for Cecil Bank (the Bank). The Bank is a Maryland chartered commercial bank, is a member of the Federal Reserve System and the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) of Atlanta, and is an Equal Housing Lender. Its deposits are insured by the Deposit Insurance Fund (DIF) of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The Bank conducts its business through its main office in Elkton, Maryland, and branches in Elkton, North East, Fair Hill, Rising Sun, Cecilton, Aberdeen, Conowingo and Havre de Grace, Maryland. On August 16, 2013, Cecil Bank completed the sale of its Aberdeen, Maryland branch office to Howard Bank, a wholly owned subsidiary of Howard Bancorp, Inc.

Lending Activities

The Bank offers mortgage loans on one-to four-family residential dwellings. Most of the loans are originated in amounts up to $350,000, on single-family properties located in the Banks primary market area. The Banks mortgage lo an originations are generally for terms of 15, 20 and 30 years, amortized on a monthly basis with interest and principal due each month. The Bank offers adjustable-rate mortgage loans with terms of up to 30 years. The Bank also originates conventional fixed-rate mortgages with terms of 15, 20, 30 or 40 years. During the year ended December 31, 2011, the Bank originated $2,145,000 in adjustable-rate mortgage loans and $7,157,000 in fixed-rate mortgage loans. The Bank also offers second mortgage loans. These loans are secured by a junior lien on residential real estate. The total of first and second liens may not exceed a 90% loan to value ratio.

The Banks construction lending has primarily involved lending for construction of single-family residences, although the Bank does lend funds for the construction of commercial properties and multi-family real estate. Land loans granted to individuals have a term of up to 10 years and interest rates adjust every ! one, t hree or five years. Land loans granted to developers have terms of up to three years. The Bank originates loans on multi-family residential and commercial properties in its market area. The Banks permanent multi-family and commercial real estate loans are typically secured by retail or wholesale establishments, motels/hotels, service industries and industrial or warehouse facilities. Multi-family and commercial real estate loans generally have terms of 20 to 40 years, are either tied to the prime rate or have interest rate adjustments every one, three or five years.

The Bank offers commercial business loans and both secured and unsecured loans and letters of credit, or lines of credit for businesses located in its primary market area. The business loans have a one year term, while lines of credit can remain open for longer periods. The Banks consumer loans consist of automobile loans, deposit account loans, home improvement loans, and other consumer loans. Consumer loans are generally offered for terms of up to five years at fixed interest rates.

Investment Activities

The Bank maintains a portfolio of mortgage-backed securities in the form of Government National Mortgage Association (GNMA) and Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (FHLMC) participation certificates. GNMA certificates are guaranteed as to principal and interest by the United States, while FHLMC certificates are guaranteed by the agency.

Sources of Funds

Deposits are attracted principally from the Banks market area through the offering of a range of deposit instruments, including savings accounts and certificates of deposit ranging in term from 91 days to 60 months, as well as regular checking, negotiable order of withdrawal (NOW), passbook and money market deposit accounts. Deposit account terms vary, principally on the basis of the minimum balance required; the time periods the funds must remain on depos it, and the interest rate. The Bank also offers individua! l retirem! ent accounts (IRAs). Deposits have been the primary source of funds for the Banks lending and investment activities and for its general business activities. The Bank is authorized, however, to use advances from the FHLB of Atlanta to supplement its supply of lendable funds and to meet deposit withdrawal requirements.
