Top Gold Stocks To Watch For 2014

Gold is one of the most influential financial instruments in the India. Banks, NBFCs and unorganized lenders are actively engaged in providing loans against gold value. The loan against value of gold has played a great role by providing liquidity for an idle asset kept in the lockers. However, in its latest move, RBI has come up with a norm for NBFCs that does not allow them to offer a loan above 60% of the value of gold.

RBI grew uncomfortable with the high growth rate of gold loans for NBFCs. It has increased its inquiry of the gold loan portfolios, even for the banks. RBI wants interest rates and growth rates on gold loans to come down, especially for NBFCs considering concentration risk and the risk of a fall in gold prices.

Furthermore, RBI directive that a bank credit to NBFCs for giving loans against gold jewelry will not be treated as exposure to the agricultural sector would hinder companies to raise easy funds for gold financing.
Some of the key points from the RBI latest guidelines for NBFCs include transparency in interest rates, due diligence in understanding the repayment capacity of the borrower, awareness of his existing debts, explicit loan agreement etc. Also, NBFCs that have gold loans of more than 50% of total financial assets have to maintain Tier -1 capital ratio of 12% from April 2014.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

We've seen the flip side of that trend play out in recent years, as rock-bottom interest rates in the U.S. have encouraged investment in higher-yielding income investments in places like Australia, Brazil, and South Africa. Interest from foreign investors got to be so extensive in Brazil that the federal government imposed a tax on foreign investors in bonds in order to curb demand and slow the pace of the Brazilian real's appreciation. Exchange-rate issues also likely played a role in the health of the commodities markets, as mining giants BHP Billiton (NYSE: BHP  ) and Rio Tinto (NYSE: RIO  ) in Australia benefited from increased demand largely for base metals. Similarly, South African gold miners AngloGold Ashanti (NYSE: AU  ) and Gold Fields (NYSE: GFI  ) outperformed rivals from elsewhere in the world, benefiting from strength in the South African rand currency.

A day earlier, Kinross Gold (KGC) suspended its semiannual dividend, and it also announced a delay in its decision on future expansion of the mill at the Tasiast mine in Africa. Finally, about a week later, AngloGold Ashanti (AU) — the third-largest producer of the yellow metal — suspended its dividend on poor earnings due to declining gold prices.

  • [By Patricio Kehoe] some future and gave several reasons for my bearish stance towards the stock. A small market, high geopolitical risk in some of the countries the firm operates, along with overexpansion in times of fluctuating gold prices gave tune to the massive shedding of shares by investment gurus. Five months have past since I last considered Golden Star potential, and everything indicates the situation has not changed.

Guru Activity Shows a Clear Tendency

Steven Cohen (Trades, Portfolio), Chuck Royce (Trades, Portfolio) and Arnold Schneider (Trades, Portfolio), had already sold their entire holdings in the company by October 2013, indicating they had little faith in the gold miner recovery. By the end of the year, Jim Simons' (Trades, Portfolio) Renaissance Technologies took a similar decision, reducing its stake in the firm by 32%. This tendency towards the sale of Golden Star stock was duly noted by investors and analysts alike, and concurs with the company poor performance.

    A Look at the Numbers

In an industry plagued by fluctuating metal prices, operating with lofty margins can be quite helpful. Yet Golden Star cannot afford such luxuries. With an operating margin of 0.1% and a net margin of -56.8% the firm is in a tight spot, especially when compared to the industry average. Unlike its industry peersmedian, which are of 2.26% and -0.09%, respectively, the Toronto-based gold miner is struggling to generate decent cash flow levels. Further metrics depict a even worse situation for shareholders: return on equity is currently at -370% and revenue growth is estimated to reach a poor 2.5%. Purchasing overpriced assets, relative to current gold prices, is surely one of the reasons for such grim figures, as financial losses have taken their toll on Golden Star.

The announcement of its 2013 full year, and fourth quarter earnings only helped to add to shareholdersconcerns. A 15% decline in revenue was expected by those

  • [By Sean Williams]

Golden Star Resources (NYSEMKT: GSS  )
It's simple physics: The bigger they are, the harder they fall. When gold prices nosedived earlier this week, gold miners with historically higher operating costs took the brunt of the hit. For the most part, that meant that development-stage miners, and those operating in Africa, where labor and political costs make cost-effective mining a challenge, took it on the chin. Possibly no stock was hammered more than Golden Star Resources, a gold miner in Ghana, which lost about one-quarter of its value on Monday alone.

  • [By Patricio Kehoe] ating price of the commodity, along with the geopolitical risks involved in mining in African nations such as Ghana, are just two of the obstacles the firm is facing. In addition, as one of the smallest gold mining firms in the industry, with a market cap of just $122 million, Golden Star has had a very difficult time financing its latest expansion projects. With share prices tumbling towards all-time lows, gurus such as Steven Cohen, Chuck Royce and Arnold Schneider have already sold out their positions in the troubled firm.

Why Have Gurus Lost Faith in Golden Star?

Despite aggressive expansion over the past decade, the Toronto-based gold mining firm has not been able to take advantage of its increased production output. Gold prices might have exploded over a ten-year period, yet the recent six-month decline has put a huge strain on Golden Star. The expedited maturation of its mines is particularly troubling, since the accelerated extraction rates, which allowed for short-term profits, are now falling considerably. The impact of the company excessive overproduction on profits and growth is clear: decreasing gold reserves mean less production, and thus reduced revenue for the gold miner. When the decline in metal prices are taken into account, the outlook is even more grim.

In addition to overexpansion at the wrong time, Golden Star position has weakened due to its comparably less efficient operations. Unlike industry peers, such as IamGold Corp. (IAG) or Gold Fields Ltd. (GFI), the majority of the Toronto-based miner assets contain refractory ore, which is far more expensive to extract than non refractory ore. And, in an attempt to switch production to the lower cost gold ore, and thus increase margins, Golden Star has depleted its minesnon refractory ore. With low reserves and mounting cash costs, the firm inevitably turned to new acquisitions.

One group of stocks not feeling the optimism today: Gold miners. With fewer concerns that a U.S. attack on Syria will be disruptive and more evidence that tapering will begin this month, the price of the precious metal has dropped 1.6% to $1,388.90 an ounce–and gold stocks are falling with it. New Gold (NGD), for one, has dropped 3% to $6.55, while Barrick Gold (ABX) has fallen 1.3% to $19.25.

Elsewhere, losers were few and far between, but many gold stocks remained under pressure as the yellow metal only managed a modest bounce after yesterday's plunge. In particular, major producer Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) and gold miner IAMGOLD (NYSE: IAG  ) fell between 4% and 5%. Both companies were on the list of holdings of billionaire hedge fund investor John Paulson's gold fund as of Dec. 31, and with rumors circulating that Paulson may have to liquidate positions to handle coming redemption requests, the stocks that he reportedly owns could see further selling pressure even if gold bullion prices rise.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Lately, those sectors haven't done all that well. Terrible performance in the commodities markets have really hurt Canada's natural resources industry, with dozens of companies suffering from the decline in precious metals like gold and silver so far this year. Vancouver-based Goldcorp (NYSE: GG  ) and Toronto's Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX  ) rank among the biggest gold producers in the world and have big advantages in cost and economies of scale over some of their smaller rivals. Yet the plunge in gold prices has hammered their share prices, casting a shadow over the overall Canadian market's performance.

Top Shipping Companies To Watch In Right Now

Whatever many retailers made in profits over the holiday season might wash away with after-Christmas sales. USA Today has made the point that discounts seem greater than usual. The newspaper’s evidence appears strong.

Several retailers should hold profits, even with late holiday discounts. Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) should post huge revenue growth and net income, if the e-commerce firm has not undermined margins with free-shipping costs. Higher margin retailers that cater to the middle class, like Macy’s Inc. (NYSE: M), should have built good enough margins to keep them relatively high as they bring in people who shop between Christmas and the end of the year.

Much less certain are the fates of retailers who needed to make money this year. The Sears and Kmart units of Sears Holdings Corp. (NASDAQ: SHLD) sit at the top of that list, along with J.C. Penney Co. Inc. (NYSE: JCP). Each faces the vexing problem of how to drag in customers and liquidate inventory not sold in November and December. Investors have not shown optimism. J.C. Penney stock sold off from more than $10 nearly a month ago to as low as $8 recently. Shares of Sears Holdings have dropped more than 25% during the past month.

Ceragon Networks (CRNT) provides wireless backhaul solutions that enable cellular operators and other wireless service providers to deliver voice and data services worldwide. This stock closed up 2.4% to $2.11 in Tuesday's trading session.

    Tuesday's Range: $2.05-$2.12
    52-Week Range: $2.00-$4.35
    Tuesday's Volume: 534,000
    Three-Month Average Volume: 321,547

From a technical perspective, CRNT trended notably higher here right above some key near-term support at $2 with above-average volume. This stock recently formed a major bottoming chart pattern, since the stock find buying interest each time it pulled back to around $2 a share. Since that bottom, shares of CRNT have started to move higher and the stock is now quickly pushing within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if CRNT manages to take out some key near-term overhead resistance levels at $2.14 to around $2.20 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in CRNT as long as it's trending above support at $2 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 321,547 shares. If that breakout begins soon, then CRNT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance level near its gap-down-day high from July at around $2.30. Any high-volume move above $2.30 will then give CRNT a chance to tag $2.50 to $2.60, or even $2.70 to $2.80.

The tendency is to look at the funds' return and volatility; which starts one off on the wrong path. • [By Rick Aristotle Munarriz]

AP It's OK to say that Pizza Hut is full of hot air when it comes to its latest marketing move. It almost certainly won't mind. Yum! Brands' (YUM) iconic Pizza Hut introduced a new crust for its hand-tossed pizzas on Thursday. Instead of stuffing crusts with various types of cheese or even pepperoni as it has done in the past, Pizza Hut is promoting the fact that its new hand-tossed pizzas now feature a more airy texture. Pumping more air into the dough is supposed to give the pies less of a cookie-cutter appearance, an unusual choice among chains that sell themselves on their consistency. Every snowflake is unique, but every chain order is supposed to be uniform across the various locations. It's what customers expect. However, just as the term "hand-tossed" conveys a personal touch, having a few more air pockets in the pizzas should generate some retro charm akin to an indie pizzeria. So Pizza Hut is proud of the "noticeable imperfections" of the new pies. It's not that big of a gamble. The rest of Pizza Hut's menu options will remain the same. If this move doesn't "pan" out, it can be quickly replaced with the next evolutionary step of crust stuffing in the pizza giant's playbook. Pizza Hut doesn't stand still, even if it's odd to find it stuffing its pies with air. Pizza Hut is Bigger Than You Think There are more than 14,000 Pizza Hut locations across 100 different countries, making the chain a major component of the Yum! Brands family that also includes Taco Bell and KFC. It could also use a boost. Comparable-store sales at domestic Pizza Hut locations slipped 1 percent in Yum! Brands' latest quarter. These are competitive times, and for Pizza Hut, the challenge now is about more than beefing up its delivery business to compete with Papa John's (PZZA) and Domino's (DPZ), which seem to always have some ridiculous price promotion going on. (This is a business that has become cutthroat enough that Pizza Hut even feels the need to explicitly offer f

Thomas Peterffy, the founder and chief of Interactive Brokers (IBKR), was around at the creation of the modern market. He was one of the first people on Wall Street to use computers to price stocks and options.

    AP

As one of the architects of the modern securities market, we reached out to him for insights into what can be done to make the securities markets more stable a day after problems at the Nasdaq Stock Market essentially shuttered the U.S. stock and options markets for about three hours. Nasdaq (NDAQ) chief, Bob Greifeld, told a reporter that Nasdaq systems, and those of the securities industry, need to be more robust.

There will be problems along the way, however.

e should all recognize that computer systems are inherently complex and subject to failure,Peterffy wrote in an email. his has always been plainly obvious to computer programmers but not so to the general public./p>

In an email, Peterffy offered what he called a few simple steps that could be taken to greatly reduce the vulnerability of the system:

    1. Exchanges should examine and reject each order the execution of which would result in an invalid trade. But they do not want to do this because it would slow up trading and exchanges could possibly lose revenue.

    2. Eliminate potential single points of failure. Broker/dealers and exchanges should have individual connections for all messages, so if any B/D or exchange fails the system continues to function.

    3. Before Nasdaq was given the authority to consolidate and charge for quotations, B/Ds had built their own quote consolidation systems. Had that remained in place, yesterday’s issue would not have arisen. Nasdaq would have stopped trading but all other venues that list those stocks could have continued transmitting their prices and quotes to all their participants.

Shares of Nasdaq OMX Group have gained 0.4% to $30.58 today, while CME Group (CME) has fallen 1.1

Video Numbers Never Lie

A great businessman once said, "Men lie, women lie, but numbers don't." When Jay-Z said this, he said it in a song titled "Reminder," and that's what I would like this post to be, a reminder about price fluctuations.

Markets are in a bit of a downward spiral as we hit correction territory. In the video above, Sterne Agee Chief Market Technician Carter Worth shared some key points explaining why prices can continue to fall. The video is pretty long, about 11 minutes, so I'll summarize what he said below:

1. When assests drop 5% in price, they tend to fall even lower.

2. Since 1927 there have been 209 "corrections" of 5% or more in market prices.

3. The average price decline is 12.2%, while the median price decline is 8.2%.

4. Stocks still have room to fall, we are near the 8.2% decline from the high, but we can still fall to the average of 12.2%.

5. The average time these corrections have lasted is 38 trading sessions, and the median is 22 trading sessions. The current selloff has only lasted for 17 sessions, which means it could fall lower and last longer.

Yesterday, there was a wide trading range, with the S&P up nearly 20 points before selling pressure caused the S&P to end at 3 points in positive territory. What we are seeing in the overall pricing of assets is a reversal towards intrinsic value. I know my last few posts have been pretty technical for a value investing blog, but I think panic and fear selling, as well as inflated valuations, have an effect on our portfolios. Mispricing of assets is the way value investors find deals in the first place.

The reason why technical analysis can play a key part in a value investing portfolio, based on fundamentals, is the structure of a deal. A value investor makes money when he buys an asset; a speculator makes money when he sells. We search high and low for value and make sure that we aren't overpaying to obtain value. When markets decline, we have a real buying opportunity as assets begin to go on sale. Looking at technical analysis, assets can continue to go on sale, even though the companies haven't become less valuable.

There is a saying that "a rising tide lifts all boats." I'd like to coin the phrase, "in a torrential downpour, everyone gets soaked." Just as in a bull market, or just a market upswing, prices of bad companies increase; in a market correction, and especially a bear market, prices of good companies decrease. Let's briefly look at Intel (INTC) a company in my portfolio.

A week ago, INTC was priced at $34.27. Yesterday, it had an earnings release demonstrating improved revenue and earnings. INTC is a great company, and increased earnings and revenue is great news, but what has the overall market selloff done to the pricing of this great company? INTC is down about 10% from a week ago. If we simply looked at prices, INTC would be out of my portfolio and should be out of yours. The point is, there was no real economic indication that INTC is now 10% less valuable as a company, no economic data to show that INTC is a bad company to own now, when the opposite data was actually reported. Pricing fluctuations rarely indicate the value of a company, but always indicate whether there is a buying opportunity for an asset, or if the asset should be overlooked for a better opportunity.

One of the companies that we have followed for a long time that's working on that is Babcock & Wilcox Co. (BWC). There's also Fluor Corp. (FLR), which is working on small modular nuclear reactors. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Within the Dow, gains were broad-based with relatively few standouts. Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG  ) gained 1% after competitor Energizer Holdings (NYSE: ENR  ) blamed P&G's promotional practices for the weak performance of Energizer's Schick line of shaving products. Although some investors have been concerned with the extent to which P&G may rely on promotions to try to recover market share, P&G executives have said the company's spending on promotions is in line with the industry and down from last year's levels. Still, P&G needs to keep demonstrating continued strength in order to regain confidence from its shareholders, who have been critical of CEO Robert McDonald and the company's business strategy.

  • [By Mike Deane]

Early on Tuesday morning, Wells Fargo downgraded Energizer Holdings (ENR) to “Market Perform” from “Outperform.” Wells Fargo maintained a range of $109 to $112 for ENR’s valuation.

Energizer’s shares have risen over 19% in the past three months, and Wells analyst Chris Ferrara believes that the stock run up now reflects the company’s upside. Low price-to-book stocks suffer from a similar problem. Who cares if the stock sells for a discount to its assets if the company can't earn a good return on said assets? United States Cellular (NYSE: USM  ) has seen its returns on assets and equity decline steadily since 2011. Thus, despite a history of trading near or below book value, the stock is down 22% since the beginning of last year.

Investment strategies are just that: strategies. Recognize that every company is different. Analyze the underlying strengths and weaknesses before you buy. Because the more you understand about what drives a business to grow, the more likely it is you'll pay a fair price to own a piece of it, Tim says.

The radiologist then assesses each marked region in order to make the final decision as to the presence or absence of a polyp.

In addition to the computer aided detection so! ftware applications, Medicsight has developed an automated carbon dioxide (CO2) insufflation device, MedicCO2LON. Public companies leveraging their patent portfolios, (aka "patent plays"), are getting the market's attention. Companies such as Vringo (VRNG), ParkerVision (PRKR), MGT Capital (MGT), Worlds Inc. (WDDD.OB) and others have presented trading opportunities due to their volatility while retaining the chance for a big payoff to those investors who stay the course. Yet there exist viable patent plays that are still undiscovered. Some of these so called "plays," which are not getting enough attention, are actually real companies making and selling real products or services in contrast to pure patent monetization companies. Some known examples are Single Touch Interactive (SITO.OB) and Blue Calypso (BCYP.OB). This article is focused on another one of these patent plays, On Track Innovations Ltd. (OTIV).

Church & Dwight (NYSE: CHD  ) , the company behind very popular brands such as Arm & Hammer, Trojan, First Response, and Oxi Clean, has watched its stock outperform the overall market in 2014 and earnings have played a key role. Another strong report could add fuel to the rally, and its first-quarter results are due out in a couple of days. Let's take a look at the most recent earnings release, expectations for the upcoming report, and take a quick look at one of its top competitors, Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG  ) , to determine if we should buy in right now or if we should wait to see what the quarter holds.

Church & Dwight Inc. (CHD) provides almost the identical growth rates of our Ross Storesexample above. However, notice how the market in this case has applied a premium historical PE ratio of 19.7 that is greater than the earnings growth rate of 17.7%. We believe this indicates a lower risk premium applied to this consumer staples company over a riskier retailer such as Ross Stores.

Relatively small consumer-goods company Church & Dwight (NYSE: CHD  ) is in a great position currently. The company's strong brands like Arm & Hammer, OxiClean, and Trojan have become household names over the years and their popularity is only increasing.
