Top Dividend Stocks For 2015: Lorillard Inc(LO)

Lorillard, Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in the manufacture and sale of cigarettes in the United States. The company offers 43 different product offerings under the Newport, Kent, True, Maverick, and Old Gold brand names. Lorillard, Inc. sells its products primarily to wholesale distributors, who in turn service retail outlets, chain store organizations, and government agencies, including the United States? Armed Forces. The company was founded in 1760 and is headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]Throughout the stock market, companies in many industries have boosted the level of their share buybacks, and tobacco has its share of players following that strategy. Philip Morris International, for instance, has spent more money buying back its stock since 2008 than it has in dividend payments to its investors, and Lorillard (NYSE: LO  ) has had a roughly 50-50 balance between buybacks and dividends over the past several years.
  • [By Dan Caplinger]Tobacco is big business in the U.S. and around the world, and the companies that produce tobacco earn strong profits. Over time, federal and state governments have increasingly shared in the revenue from cigarettes and other tobacco products. In the two decades between 1992 and 2012, total federal tax collections on tobacco tripled to $15.6 billion, while net state tax collections have risen at almost the same pace to more than $18.2 billion in 2012. For producers, taxes have risen in concert, with Altria Group (NYSE: MO  ) having paid $6.8 billion in excise taxes on tobacco products in 2013, while Reynolds American (NYSE: RAI  ) paid $3.7 billion and Lorillard (NYSE: LO  ) added almost $2 billion more.
  • [By Ted Cooper]Much attention has been focused on Reynolds American (NYSE: RAI  ) since it announced plans to acquire rival cigarette maker Lorillard (NYSE: LO  ) in a $27.4 billion deal. The merger will combine the No. 2 and No. 3 U.S. tobacco companies and change the competitive landscape. Reynolds American shareholders have already reaped gains from the proposed deal; the stock is up about 18% since rumors of the merger hit the market in February. However, past returns do not indicate future results. Investors must evaluate the facts to determine whether Reynolds American still represents a good investment at its higher price. Let's take a look.

10 Best Logistics Stocks To Watch For 2014

In what I suppose was meant to be a hilarious stunt, lululemon athletica (NASDAQ: LULU  ) posted a fake CEO job listingon its website. The job is real, but the listing was facetious. However, it does shine a light on what Lululemon needs -- a CEO who can take it to the next phase of its existence. Christine Day was both loved and hated by Lululemon's core customers and, with her departure, the brand has a chance to get a more unanimous choice on board. It also has a chance to completely screw things up.

While customers may have been lukewarm to Day, investors loved her outlook. The ex-Starbucks Day had a global vision for Lululemon, but it was slow to play out. The company's incredibly conservative expansion plans read like a Jane Austen how-to-land-a-husband guide. All the courting of yoga instructors, vendors, and consumers made for slow going, and gave Under Armour (NYSE: UA  ) and others a chance to catch up.

Who wants to be a millionaire?
The Lululemon CEO spot is one of the most wide-open hires in recent memory. The company has shown that it's happy to pull in non-yoga focused executives, but it's in a position where one good candidate just isn't enough. Analysts have pointed out that Lululemon is currently in a management limbo, with executive vacancies in its product, marketing, and logistics departments.

In a perfect world stocks would move in predictable, manageable ways. We don't live - nor do we trade in - a perfect world. In the real world we have to adapt to and deal with the curve balls the market throws us, and there are no two stocks that illustrate that point better than Document Security Systems, Inc. (NYSEMKT:DSS) and Nortech Systems Incorporated (NASDAQ:NSYS) to today. While both NSYS and DSS are up today, one's overbought and ripe for a pullback, while the other is likely at the beginning of a trade-worthy rally.

Since that time, MEMP is down 0.6 percent and BBEP is up 6.4 percent. So the discount has narrowed somewhat since September.

Online donations to U.S. nonprofit groups are growing much faster than other types of gifts, according to new research by The Chronicle of Philanthropy.

The Chronicle found that online donations in 2012 grew to $2.1 billion, a 14% increase from the previous year, based on information provided by online-fundraising processors Blackbaud, Network for Good and PayPal.

Online giving to the country’s biggest charitable groups also grew by 14%, it said.

Meanwhile, the Chronicle noted, total donations grew only 3.5%, or 1.5% adjusted for inflation, according to Giving USA's yearly study.

Notwithstanding continued growth, online giving still accounts for only a small fraction of most charities’ budgets. According to the Chronicle’s research, the median share is just 2.1% of all donations from private sources for the large charities surveyed.

That’s changing. Nearly three-quarters of the groups surveyed had a goal for online donations to account for more than 10% of their overall fundraising efforts in coming years, and about a fifth expected Internet gifts to account for as much as 20% of their overall donations.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Chuck Carnevale]

Actually, there are several companies on these lists that qualified for either or both of my favorites lists. For example, Aflac (AFL) and or Emerson Electric (EMR) could easily be on both lists. My point is that I feel the reader should give the same consideration to each of these names as they would the two top 10 lists. To be clear, selecting the top 10 was difficult and therefore to a great extent subjective on my part. My method was to simply run a F.A.S.T. Graphson each Dividend Champion with above-average total return calculations. Then my lists were created by picking and choosing those companies that from my review looked best based on value, earnings and safety.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Harry Domash, Publisher, DividendDetective and Winning Investing]

Harry Domash: Yeah, in fact, H&Q Life Sciences, ticker (HQL), is actually a closed-end fund, but it invests entirely in biotech and pharmaceutical companies, and if you look around the world, the investing stocks right now—besides the social media stocks—that's really the one area that has had a lot of recent growth and we expect that to continue.

I think the closed-end fund, and we'll get into that maybe a little bit later, but closed-end funds are a good way to cover it, when you're talking about a sector like that.

Johnson & Johnson is an interesting case, because, as you know, Johnson & Johnson is a big company that invests, and that owns a lot of different companies itself in the medical field.

You know, it owns hundreds of operating companies and it's primarily in the pharmaceuticals, and medical devices, and in consumer products, but Johnson & Johnson was a mismanaged company for a while and they were really underperforming their peers.

In fact, some of their factories were closed, their pharmaceutical production factories were forcibly closed by the government because they didn't meet standards, but they were taken over by a new CEO a few years ago, two or three years ago, and now things are improving, so Johnson & Johnson is kind of coming from down and out to being a leading company again.

They've got a lot of products, cancer-type products, and things on the pipeline and it just seems like things are going very well so we have hopes that Johnson & Johnson has reported the last two quarters are the first ones that have really been decent, they really showed growth, and then we expect that to accelerate so we're pretty hot on Johnson & Johnson now.

Steve Halpern: One particularly interesting portfolio that you maintain that I haven't seen anywhere else is based on closed-end funds that pay monthly dividends&mdash

Gilead Sciences is down ~4% this morning and some investors believe it is due to commentary by Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) (we were on the EPS call and they did not say anything specific, they just said they will work to make Olysio accessible and it will remain competitive, some investors think Olysio price will get cut — but, in our view, logically – if Sovaldi is still $84k, then Olysio does not have much of any room to go if you can just get Harvoni for $94k…..). Others think it is due to concerns around AbbVie (ABBV) needing to come in a low price (we predict this will not happen, it will be close to Sovaldi pricing) or Irish tax concerns, which we wrote about twice suggesting minimal impact here to Gilead Sciences.

An investment in Hi-Crush is not without risks. It's not as diversified as rivalU.S. Silica Holdings (NYSE: SLCA  ) ,which has pursued a strategy that has it boasting over 200 products and 1,400 customers. Hi-Crush has just a handful of customers and one main product. Meanwhile, U.S. Silica is much more geographically diverse with 15 facilities compared to just two for Hi-Crush. The top contributing stock for the quarter was Treasury Wine Estates (ASX:TWE), an Australian-based vineyard operator and winemaker that also has significant assets in North America, as well as a global marketing and distribution business. During the quarter Treasury Wine Estates received a preliminary, highly conditional bid from a global investment firm, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR), to purchase the company for AUD 4.70 per share. The bid was rejected, with management stating that the per-share offer amount undervalued the company. However, the board of directors indicated that the company would consider any new proposals that reflected a price closer to their perception of fair value. Discussions with KKR have since ended without any subsequent offers. We believe that management made the correct decision, as we too feel that the business value of Treasury Wine Estates is worth more than what KKR offered. We recently spoke with Treasury Chairman, Paul Rayner, and new CEO, Michael Clarke, with regard to this issue, in addition to recent management changes and a new AUD 35 million cost-cutting program, and we are confident that the company leadership team has been substantially improved and is working to increase Treasury Wine Estatesoverall value for the benefit of shareholders.

Itsuo Inouye/APA Panasonic 150-inch high-definition plasma TV on display at a 2008 expo in Tokyo. TOKYO -- Panasonic will pull out of the plasma television panel business by the end of the financial year to March 2014, sources familiar with the situation told Reuters, marking a key milestone in the long-term decline of Japan's TV industry. Panasonic had been widely expected to back out of the unprofitable business, but the exit comes sooner than predicted and underlines President Kazuhiro Tsuga's determination to weed out weak operations as he focuses on higher-margin products to end years of losses at the consumer electronics conglomerate. Panasonic's TV division has been a major contributor to the electronics company's combined $15 billion (9 billion pounds) net loss in its two latest financial years. Its TV business posted an operating loss of 88.5 billion yen ($913 million) in the last financial year. With the closure of its sole plasma panel factory in western Japan, Panasonic will book an impairment loss of more than 40 billion yen on the last remaining factory building in operation, the sources added. The company set aside 120 billion yen to cover restructuring costs at the start of the current financial year. The move also signals the demise in Japan of a technology in which TV makers once invested heavily but has now been overtaken by advances in the liquid crystal display business. Plasma display TVs accounted for less than 6 percent of global shipments in 2012, compared with 87 percent for LCD TVs, according to research firm DisplaySearch. Squeezed by the strong yen in recent years, Japan's TV makers have also lost their innovative edge against nimbler rivals such as South Korea's Samsung Electronics, with deep resources to spend on research and development. Sony (SNE), Panasonic and Sharp combined had a less than 20 percent share of the worldwide flat panel TV market by revenue. Samsung had a 27.7 percent share, and LG Electronics had 15 pe

Top 5 Low Price Stocks For 2014

Maxims can be the kiss of death in investing. "Always buy low P/E stocks." "Always look for low price-to-book." Holding fast to these supposedly bulletproof investment strategies -- good as they sound -- could cost you, says Fool contributor Tim Beyers in the following video.

The problem is context. A low price-to-earnings multiple is helpful only in those instances where earnings are growing at a faster pace than the low multiple implies. Look at for-profit educator Apollo Group (NASDAQ: APOL  ) , which has suffered a single-digit P/E ratio throughout the past year. Revenue and earnings fell consistently over the same period, and the stock is off 50%.

Low price-to-book stocks suffer from a similar problem. Who cares if the stock sells for a discount to its assets if the company can't earn a good return on said assets? United States Cellular (NYSE: USM  ) has seen its returns on assets and equity decline steadily since 2011. Thus, despite a history of trading near or below book value, the stock is down 22% since the beginning of last year.

Investment strategies are just that: strategies. Recognize that every company is different. Analyze the underlying strengths and weaknesses before you buy. Because the more you understand about what drives a business to grow, the more likely it is you'll pay a fair price to own a piece of it, Tim says.

Do you agree? Please watch the video to get Tim's full take, and then leave a comment to let us know which investment strategies have worked best for you.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 name that's quickly moving within range of triggering a big breakout trade is Velti (VELT), which provides mobile marketing and advertising technology solutions that enable brands, advertising agencies, and mobile operators to implement interactive and measurable campaigns by communicating with and engaging consumers via their mobile devices. This stock has been destroyed by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off sharply by 91%.

If you take a look at the chart for Velti, you'll notice that this stock recently gapped down big from over $1 a share to 33 cents per share with monster downside volume. Following that gap down, shares of VELT have started to consolidate and move sideways between 33 cents per share on the downside and 44 cents per share on the upside. Shares of VELT are spiking sharply higher on Thursday above some near-term support at 35 cents per share. That move is pushing this stock within range of triggering a big breakout trade above the upper-end of its recent sideways trading chart pattern.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in VELT if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance at 44 cents per share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above that level with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 2.02 million shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then VELT could easily explode higher and potentially re-test its gap down day high from August at 66 cents per share.

Traders can look to buy VELT off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at 35 cents to 33 cents per share. One can also buy VELT off strength once it clears 44 cents per share with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Top Regional Bank Companies To Buy For 2014

Lakeland Bancorp (LBAI) is a very cost efficient, well-capitalized small-cap bank that operates 46 offices throughout northern New Jersey. With $2.9 billion in assets, $2.388 billion in deposits and $2.17 billion in loans, Lakeland has established itself as the third largest commercial bank headquartered in the state. Recently, Lakeland closed its acquisition of Somerset Hills Bancorp which added $368.9 million in assets in a deal worth $65.7 million (1.52X Somerset's tangible book value).

Since loan growth has been extremely hard for some regional banks, I think this deal is great for shareholders because it comes during a time when Lakeland has already been growing loans organically, and at a price lower than LBAI's own P/TBV. Since this new addition has yet to hit the reported books, below I have provided a review of Lakeland to help assess the banks pre-acquisition financial position and current valuation.

The U.S. Department of Defense awarded 13 new contracts Wednesday, worth more than $730 million in aggregate. The largest of these awards, a $230 million contract to upgrade the U.S. Air Force's Digital Video Laboratory III, went to privately owned SRI International of Menlo Park, Calif. But publicly traded companies weren't entirely left out in the cold.

Johnson Controls' (NYSE: JCI  ) Federal Systems unit, along with six private companies, all claimed the right to participate in a firm-fixed-price, option-filled, multiple-award, task-order contract worth up to $95 million. Under this contract, the seven winners will compete to complete task orders for providing "construction and equipment installation services" worldwide for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Verizon (NYSE: VZ  ) Business Network Services won an $11.9 million modification of a contract to supply "managed network services" to the U.S. Army. And Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC  ) won a $10.4 million contract modification to support unspecified "critical components" for U.S. and Coalition Partners in Afghanistan. The Pentagon noted in its announcement that the cumulative value of this latter contract is now approaching $198 million.

Editor's note: A previous version of this article incorrectly mentioned Smith & Wesson Holding Corp.(NASDAQ: SWHC) as securing a contract. That is not the case. The Fool regrets the error.

Alas, the 2.7% spike in Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ  ) shares today didn't stem from falling unemployment claims. The surge instead followed new details in Verizon's attempt to buy the remaining 45% of its Verizon Wireless stake from U.K.-based Vodafone. Apparently, Verizon's bid is getting closer to being final by the day; one feasible scenario has Verizon buying Vodafone's 45% stake for a $100 billion, 50-50 mix of cash and stock.

Verizon (VZ) beat analyst estimates by four cents a share, but reported revenue $29 million below expectations.

Of course, this earnings season is also reporting the usual share of just plain bad results, such as the five cents a share earnings and the $66 million revenue miss at Coach (COH).

OK, my last bullish call on ZBB Energy Corporation (NYSEMKT:ZBB) didn't work out so well. It looks like it was just too soon to expect a bounce from ZBB back on April 2nd when it was still in the shadow of a huge runup and a subsequent pullback. The dust has fully settled now, however, and most of the clues are now pointing in a bullish direction.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

For those of you that were lucky enough to read, and act on, my bullish call on ZBB Energy Corporation (NYSEMKT:ZBB) penned one week ago (almost to the hour), then congratulations - you're up 270%, give or take. Now get out. Seriously. I have a funny feeling that ZBB along with FuelCell Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:FCEL), Ballard Power Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:BLDP), and all the other names in the alternative electricity-production group are seeing their last hurrah today. The smart money is already thinking about getting out now, selling into the strength all the late-comers are creating for FCEL, BLDP, and its peers.

  • [By James E. Brumley]

Back on March 11th, yours truly opined that the wild bullishness that had carried names like ZBB Energy Corporation (NYSEMKT:ZBB), Plug Power Inc. (NASDAQ:PLUG), FuelCell Energy Inc. (NASDAQ:FCEL), and Ballard Power Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:BLDP) to triple digit gains (in just a few days) was coming to a close, and taking profits on any and all of these stocks would be a good idea. It was an idea that went over like a lead balloon, judging from the responses I got. How ridiculous of me to turn bearish on those names! FCEL, PLUG, ZBB, and BLDP were all flying high, and obviously since they soared over the course of the two weeks leading up to that date, they could only keep going higher forever.

Top Regional Bank Companies To Buy For 2014: Massive Dynamics Inc (MSSD)

Massive Dynamics, Inc., incorporated on March 15, 2011, is a development-stage company. The Company is providing services to communication tower operators. On August 20, 2012, Kylemore Corp. (Kylemore) approximately 90% of the Company. On April 16, 2013, the Company entered into an Asset Purchase Agreement with Real-View 3D (RV3D). With the Company's acquisition of the assets of RV3D, the Company is providing engineering and compliance to communications tower operators to three dimension (3D) imaging. RV3D is an image capture product company that has developed and is committed to design, patent, manufacture and market 3D imaging Z-axis capture products for the consumer computer peripherals market.

The Company has developed technology around an imaging technology known as structured light, which allows for the rapid capture and processing of the digital signal capture 3D images of objects or real time 3D video of a desired target. A structured light image is a calibrated grid of lines that is projected on the subject. These projected lines deviate as they fall over the subject. An image of these lines is captured. Real View 3D software can extract Z-axis data from these line deviations and a topographical map is created. To image a complete subject, the subject is rotated 360 degrees for the image and then another 360 degree rotation for capturing the structured light for the Z axis map information. The resulting Z axis map and the image are then fused into a 360 degree renderable image. This image can then be exported into many other formats for viewing. The Company's primary business will be to develop and market 3D scanning, capture, rendering, and printing products to four markets: consumer, commercial, industrial, and medical.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rich Smith]

The problem with that, of course, is that competition is beginning to emerge in machine selling, as small companies with names such as ExOne (NASDAQ: XONE  ) and Massive Dynamics (NASDAQOTH: MSSD  ) begin to horn in on the printer biz. Competition will probably arise even faster in the selling of printing composites, as Hewlett-Packard discovered to its detriment, when printer ink cartridge "refillers" began stealing away its lucrative ink business.

For its part, the S&P 500 is also relatively stable with its constituency. Rather than making changes on a regular schedule, the S&P tends to move as needed. For instance, in its most recent substitution, the S&P will add News Corp. (NASDAQ: FOX  ) after it splits from its 21st Century Fox unit, with News Corp. getting the company's newspaper and book publishing business while Fox keeps its other media properties. Falling out of the index will be Apollo Group (NASDAQ: APOL  ) , whose for-profit educational focus has fallen out of favor among investors in light of regulatory scrutiny.

Compelling product and customer base Finisar appears to have one of the broadest product portfolios in the industry. While the firm does have a number of potent competitors, notably JDS Uniphase (JDSU) in the telecom space and Avago (AVGO) in the datacom space, it appears that no other company matches the breadth of Finisar's product offerings across both of these segments.

The company has a current ROE of 14.21% which is higher than the ones exhibited by Micron Technology (MU) andBroadcom Corp (BRCM). In general, analysts consider ROE ratios in the 15-20% range as representing attractive levels for investment. So for investors looking those levels or more, Texas Instruments and Avago Technologies Ltd (AVGO) could be the options. It is very important to understand this metric before investing, and it is important to look at the trend in ROE over time.
