Top 10 Dividend Stocks To Watch Right Now

LONDON -- I've been popping stocks into my shopping basket in recent weeks and it's about time I took one or two to the checkout. Here are five stocks I've found tempting, so should I buy any of them?

Amec
When I sized up engineering consultancy Amec (LSE: AMEC  ) on Feb. 14, it had just endured an unhappy Valentine's Day. It must have expected a big hug after publishing full-year results showing profit before tax of 8% to 336 million pounds, a healthy 3.6 billion pounds order book, and a 20% dividend hike. Instead, it got a slap in the face, with the share price falling 6%.

Share price growth has been disappointing for the last five years, during which time it returned just 30%. It is down 15% over two years, against a 7% rise for the FTSE 100 as a whole. Its recent first-quarter trading update didn't charm the market, either, despite a 68 million-pound services contract for BP. Investors are worried by management caution and its low-to-mid-single-digit revenue growth forecast.

Top 10 Cheapest Stocks To Own Right Now: Plum Creek Timber Company Inc.(PCL)

Plum Creek Timber Company, Inc. is a publicly owned real estate investment trust (REIT). The trust owns and manages timberlands in the United States. Its products include lumber products, plywood, medium density fiberboard, and related by-products, such as wood chips. The trust also focuses on mineral extraction and natural gas production, communication, and transportation. Plum Creek Timber Company was founded in 1989 and is based in Seattle, Washington.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Rick Munarriz]

Plum Creek Timber (NYSE: PCL  ) knows that it's the wood that makes it good. The private landowner with a whopping 6.3 million acres of timberlands is growing its quarterly dividend by 5% to $0.44 a share.

  • [By Saibus Research]

WY and the majority of the timber, forest and paper products companies have a track record of unimpressive returns on capital, cyclical revenue and profit trends, heavy use of capital expenditures, and significant environmental regulation. We also think that WY's conversion to a REIT was a mistake. Morningstar Investment Research's Timber, Forest and Paper Products analyst Dan Rohr said it best when he rated WY and its Timber REIT peers Rayonier (RYN), Potlatch (PCH) and Plum Creek (PCL) as not possessing any economic moat. That probably explains why we only have an ancillary exposure to this industry for our proprietary portfolio based on our holdings in Brookfield Infrastructure (BIP) and Cintas (CTAS). Brookfield's Timber segment only accounts for 5% of its Fund Flows from operations and Cintas's document management business is suffering from reduced prices on recycled paper. At least Cintas Document Management only accounts for 8% of Cintas's revenue.

  • [By Jacob Roche]

Weyerhaeuser (NYSE: WY  ) and Plum Creek Timber (NYSE: PCL  ) have seen sales go up almost 20% in the past three years, and margins are strong. Weyerhaeuser and Plum Creek both get a significant amount of their business from the sale of whole logs, manufactured wood, and pulp, making them key suppliers to the increasing demand from different industries. Plum Creek is in a particularly good position, as much of its assets are in the eastern half of the United States, which has been less affected by the beetle.

As a result, Gerry cut Atwood Oceanics, Ensco (ESV) and Noble Energy (NE) to Market Perform from Outperform. He raised Rowan (RDC) to Outperform from Market Perform. Rowan was also a favorite of Barclays.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Higher oil prices have helped offshore drillers like Ensco (ESV), Noble (NE), Diamond Offshore Drilling (DO) and Seadrill (SDRL) rally and now they’re getting another boost today after fleet updates from Diamond Offshore and Ensco.

    Reuters

Diamond Offshore’s fleet update was largely in-line with expectations, note Cowen’s J.B. Lowe and Roland Morris:

As previously announced The Ocean Lexington has been contracted to work for a term of 1,189 days starting in December 2014 at a dayrate of $160k/d with PEMEX. The rate reflects the weak pricing environment in the lower-end of the floater market, but squeezing out any cash flow over the next several years from this asset is a positive for the rig given that it would have likely been stacked had it not won the contract.

But Ensco’s fleet status update contained a shocker: It had contracted one of its offshore drillers at a rate well above what anyone thought possible in this weak market. Johnson Rice’s Georg Venturatos explains:

Ensco provided an updated fleet status report, which was highlighted by an initial contract for its ultra-deepwater newbuild drillship, Ensco DS-8 (12,000′), expected to begin work for Total (TOT) in Angola during 3Q15 (through 3Q20) at an initial dayrate in the high $610 range (vs. our estimate of $505k/day) with periodic increases equating to an average rate in the mid-$650 range over the 5-year program (ex-mob).

Cowen’s Lowe and Morris warn not to read too much into Ensco’s new contract:

The $650kd average rate is well ahead of the low-$500′s that we expected, as negotiations with Total began nearly a year ago, and the rig was initially bid over a year ago when the UDW market was significantly stronger. The current market remains challenged, with lower-spec ultra-deep water assets commanding rates as low as $350k/ d. We expect the current market weakness to last well into 2015. There are stil

Shares of Transocean are unchanged at $40.47 today, while Ensco (ESV) has risen 0.7% to $52.43, Atwood Oceanics (ATW) is little changed at $49.47,Diamond Offshore(DO) has risen 0.4% to $47.02 and Seadrill (SDRL), whose strategy Transocean may be following, has ticked up 0.2% to $34.30.

The past six months have been unkind to offshore drillers like Noble (NE), Ensco (ESV), Rowan (RDC) and Transocean (RIG). That doesn’t mean it’s time to buy, however.

AP, Showtime From a high-end apparel retailer making a down-market move to the leading video service adding to its growing library, here are the wonders and blunders of the week. Amazon.com (AMZN) -- Winner Apple (AAPL) may have hit the market with the new iPad Air on Friday, but it was Amazon making the most of the launch -- to promote its own platform. Amazon has spent most of the week pushing its new 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HDX tablet at the top of the popular e-tailer's home page, pitting it against the iPad Air. Amazon points out that its Kindle Fire HDX is 20 percent lighter, packs 950,000 more pixels, and will set shoppers back $120 less than the somewhat comparable iPad Air. You have to admire Amazon's moxie here. Apple just moved more than 14 million iPads in its latest quarter -- and that was the older models during a non-holiday quarter. Amazon's willing to butt heads with the top brand in tablets, and it's doing it on a site that it knows will be getting very busy in the coming weeks as holiday shoppers begin to research the best tablet to buy this season. Well played, Amazon. lululemon ahtletica (LULU) -- Blunder When it comes to selling high-end yoga clothing, no one does it as well as lululemon athletica. Sure, there was that embarrassing episode earlier this year where its black Luon yoga pants were too sheer, resulting in the departure of its head of merchandising. However, how do you justify filling that opening by bringing in Kmart's head of apparel to be your new chief products officer? Kmart has struggled with years of declining comps, and it's a lackluster discount department store chain. Even if she was more than qualified for the gig, investor -- and more dangerously customer -- perceptions may mark down lululemon's image. Pitney Bowes (PBI) -- Winner Metered mail may be a fading industry, but that didn't stop Pitney Bowes from hitting a fresh 52-week high this week after posting encouraging quarterly results. The key here is tha

Apparently, the majority of analysts like the stock. That surprising. The best chance investors have is that Pitney Bowes continues to cut costs so the stock can stay afloat while large dividends are paid out. However, over the long haul, there is no business without growth.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

Pitney Bowes (NYSE: PBI  ) also became a victim of a dividend cut as it chose to reduce its payout by half in order to help it conserve cash as its financial results have deteriorated. With the very difficult task of repositioning itself from the largely obsolete postage business to become a more full-service enterprise communications company, Pitney Bowes will need as much spare cash as possible to reinvest in its new business opportunities.

Compared with the public REIT peers, I believe that Chambers Street will compare favorably to W.P. Carey (WPC) and Lexington Realty Trust (LXP). Both of these REITs own larger box assets and they both have conservative and well-positioned balance sheets. Here is a snapshot of Chambers Street's capitalization:
