For the second time in two days, Western Digital (NASDAQ:WDC) is winning buy ratings on Wall Street.

As confirmed by TheFly.com, analysts at Chicago-based investment banker Guggenheim initiated coverage of Western Digital with a buy rating and a $100 price target, calling the stock their "best idea in IT Hardware & Mobility." This morning, we're hearing Canadian banker BMO Capital chime in with a buy rating of its own -- an upgrade from market perform to outperform, and a less ambitious $90 price target.

According to BMO, with Western Digital's acquisition of SanDisk now complete, 2017 could be the year that the memory maker resumes growing. Here are three things you need to know.

Top 5 Canadian Stocks For 2019: Plains All American Pipeline L.P.(PAA)

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

One oil midstream company that meets all these criteria is Plains All American Pipelines (NYSE:PAA). While the oil pipeline MLP did struggle during the recent oil market downturn, it's working to address those issues, which positions it to deliver better returns for investors in the coming years. Among the problems it's fixing is its balance sheet, with Plains' aim to get its leverage ratio to less than 4.0 times by early next year. Meanwhile, the company has invested heavily in strengthening its portfolio of fee-bearing assets so that long-term contracts now support 90% of its earnings. Finally, Plains only expects to pay out about 60% of its cash flow to support its high-yield dividend in 2018, which is an ultra-conservative level for an oil pipeline stock.

  • [By Matthew DiLallo]

However, thanks to the efforts of Plains All American Pipeline (NYSE:PAA), that problem will start easing up a bit at the beginning of November, when the company expects to start up its expanded Sunrise pipeline. It's one of several initiatives by the industry to prevent its main growth engine from stalling out.

On a more positive note, pipeline companies are building new lines as fast as they can. Plains All American Pipeline (NYSE:PAA) is working to accelerate the development of its two oil pipeline projects to get them into service sooner than the current timeline of January 2019 for its Sunrise project and the early part of next year's fourth quarter for partial service of Cactus II. Plains All American Pipelines is doing that by incurring additional costs to expedite material deliveries and vendor services as well as installing temporary generators until permanent utility power is in place. However, even though pipeline companies like Plains All American are working as fast as they can, the industry's capacity problems likely won't go away until the end of next year when the first wave of new pipelines enter service.

The stock market finally hit some resistance on Tuesday, giving up ground and breaking a long streak of consecutive advances for most major benchmarks. Market participants got spooked by a rise in interest rates, with 10-year Treasury yields once again climbing above the 3% mark and leading some to predict even steeper advances in the future. With budget deficits ballooning, higher interest expenses on the national debt could have a dramatic impact on the U.S. economy, especially if it lures investors away from high-flying stocks. Yet even amid the bond-driven downturn, some individual companies saw good news lift their shares. Valeant Pharmaceuticals International (NYSE:VRX), Hollysys Automation Technologies (NASDAQ:HOLI), and Ascena Retail Group (NASDAQ:ASNA) were among the best performers on the day. Here's why they did so well.
